Might be a mistake because what this had going for it early on was an anti Pacific Rim feel. Which we all know bombed.
Erm... Actually, we don't all know that. It is known it didn't financially perform quite up to hopes & expectations, but it also wasn't a flop; there's a huge range of degrees of success rather than a strict "hit / bomb" binary, and it did well enough that a sequel is still being considered. I don't think that would be the case if it were a flat-out bomb...
Edit: what mstrox said. I'm reading and posting on a phone at the moment, and I'm less used to the screen arrangement and hadn't noticed the other post, somehow.
Well, it was a flop in the US when you consider how much it cost to make plus promotion. A flop by a large extent. The foreign market bailed it out. The new Zilla maybe the next Avatar I don't know. But it could flop like PR did domestically. While I think the film will do great across the board they are sorta of taking a risk when they just presume the foreign market is going to recoup their costs.
Yeah, it was a flop if you consider costs but arbitrarily leave out most of its earnings. And wayta dis the rest of the world as inconsequential. I'm sure you didn't mean it, but you come across a bit dismissive of the rest of the world.
Anyway, I don't think the movie really counts as a flop unless either a) not many people saw it, which clearly isn't the case "even" in the US, or b) it didn't make money, for which it doesn't really matter whether it made most of its money domestically or not and for which breaking it down by country is irrelevant.
As far as foreign grosses for this movie go... Actually, they do indeed take them into account when greenlighting movies. Why wouldn't they?

No I am not being dismissive of the rest of the world. But I'm thinking like Hollywood. There's bragging rights, egos, power grabs, merchandising. I'm sure we're not going to see an ad in USA Today magazine declaring what a huge hit PR was in China! The kids in China make the toys, not buy them. Was there a toy line? If so I bet that tanked too. I don't imagine there is one person on the board that's happy with a domestic flop even if it did well in other countries.

Seriously I grew up on the original Zilla all the way through the 70's so there's a huge nostalgia factor for me. It might also be the first film music that really captured my attention as a youth.
