I cannot possibly nominate the 'best season' of WT - I loved the show in toto, and I did think Ward Bond was great. I loved Charlie, the cook, and the thing about WT was the excellent standard of writing, acting and production values. The peripatetic adventures of the wagoners created many opportunities for brilliant storytelling, which I enjoyed later in the 1960's when I grew a bit older. I would say WT was yet another example of first class television at a time when cinema was being robbed of audiences and many of the creative talent migrated to the smaller screen - fortunately for us all!!
I loved film from a very early age - 5 years precisely - and I track that exactly to "The King and I" when I sat in the aisle on the floor to watch the film in a grotty little picture theatre, but I was overcome and a lifetime love of cinema developed from that moment. Top quality television was also a passion, but my mother wouldn't let me watch it on week-nights because of homework. TV was rationed to select times of a weekend, so I missed many excellent programs which I later saw and loved, for example "The Rifleman". Sometimes I hid under the next door neighbour's house (it was on high stilts) so that I could LISTEN to the shows as I was forbidden to watch. Fortunately, the neighbour had the volume turned up loudly so this little tragic 12 year old was desperate enough to sit under his house!!
