Jon Burlingame has an interesting story in Variety about a new "Music for Visual Media" department at super-agency WME. Most of the story is about Amos Newman, son of Randy, whom Ari Emmanuel picked to lead the new department. Zimmer is the highest profile get for Newman so far.

But I know there are a lot of Roque Banos fans here and there is this nugget in there as well:

Spanish composer Roque Banos, a recent WME addition, will be writing one for Ron Howard’s 19th-century shipwreck saga “Heart of the Sea.” Zimmer, who has done five films for Howard, recommended Banos, but as Banos says, “a big part of me doing this score was because Amos was fighting for it.”

Howard creates great opportunities for music with his movies, so I expect a movie from him about a whaling vessel that is destroyed by a sperm whale leaving its crew shipwrecked would be fertile ground for a composer as talented as Banos.

FINALLY!

+1

Looking forward to it. Really glad Banos is getting more recognition domestically.

Props to Zimmer for recommending him too!

When Banos had his first signing after moving to Hollywood I told him he was the next Desplat. He said Wow! So do I.

The story supposedly involves cannibalism, so this sounds like it could edge towards that macabre territory that he handled so brilliantly in EVIL DEAD along with the broader seafaring action. Really, really promising for him.

Maybe but I hadn't seen it discussed here elsewhere. Old news can still be new news to some.

Haha then I hope you get a nice long sleep tonight after your very long day of making the world right again. The 1.6% of film music fans who had not heard this news will just be over here in our cave raking sand back and forth.

I don't know anything about Banos, but it's great that this film is getting made. I read the book about four years ago, & it's such a great (& real) story. Apparently the story of a whale turning on & sinking a whaling ship is where Melville got the idea for Moby Dick.
