THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT by Michel Legrand would be an awesome release, which has only been available on LP in the past.

Is it confirmed that the LP (re-?)recording is the only material that survives in case of this one?

Multi tracks do exist over at Sony Music that include selections that were not on the original LP. As to if any of it is salvageable (or necessary to include) is unknown.

So I'll just say what others might be thinking, it's a shame that the Multi-tracks weren't investigated for use/expansion because now no label will be interested in pursuing that.

Sure. And maybe there's great material that's left sitting in the vault. I don't remember the film almost at all.

On the other hand, this is a delightful LP, for a forgotten film, offered at 30% off the usual price. And I know this is anathema to many here, but as much as I love some expansions, I don't happen to believe that every score needs to be released in full.

Awesome release!

I'll be honest, I had never heard of this score/film. I just listened to it myself as some of you know, I work at Varése and it's a fun upbeat catchy lovely score. I was trying to find an adjective that describes it and the one that really comes to mind is lovely.

Lately I've been trying to play catch-up with a lot of music, most of it has been recent modern film scores and many have left me feeling sad and wanting more. This was a welcome surprise to listen to. I still have not seen the film, so I have NO idea the context of the score to the film, but if you want a fun lovely score with some nice themes pick this bad boy up.

This is a Limited Edition, similar to what the great folks at Intrada are doing. We'll keep making this baby as long as there is demand, once that slows down, we'll let you all know we're going to pull the life support for this title.

smile

Um, just to let you know that the phrase "pick this bad boy up" is a copywrite infringement.
You owe Josh Mitchell $10.00 (or a copy of the Mancini) wink

D'OHHHHHHHHHHHH smile

I found that the album is a great listen and was a nice change to all those 70 plus minute albums. I have no idea how much music is still in the picture that is not on the CD. I'm now starting to think the same as another person on here that posted that not every album needs to be complete or expanded upon. Even while saying that I'm VERY glad I have a complete "Explorers" and "Innerspace." I just think some I'm happy are expanded and others I'm fine aren't expanded. When I import my music into iTunes lately I've been importing ONLY the tracks that I know I'll listen to in the future and most of the time my album lengths are around 20-40'ish minutes.

Adding tracks to an LP to CD program isn't as simple as one may expect and that is why this is priced accordingly to make it affordable to all of us at $13.98. smile

I'm not sure, James. Quartet loves Mancini! If sales prove fan interest, they might serve it with all seven courses. Particularly if Varese sells out quickly.

No sound samples?

Sound samples are missing not just for this page but for a bunch of the new releases that I saw. The Youtube samples posted were nice enough but I'd like to see VS put their own samples to give us a glimpse of the whole album.

Just got mine today -- the sound is excellent. Even better, the music is a complete joy to listen to, displaying the usual delightful Mancini lighter side but also some fine bits of underscoring not always included on Mancini score releases. The album is sadly way too short at 32 minutes, but the pricing is adjusted proportionately so I can't complain too much. While any Mancini would be difficult for me to pass up, I half expected to be disappointed when I listened to this. I was not. I happily and heartily recommend this to Mancini fans and anyone who enjoys a lively and tuneful who-done-it score with some unexpected depth. Well done, Varese!

Agree with you without reservation, Dana. This is quite simply one of Mancini's best in his light comedy/drama style. Tuneful and energetic but also including some dramatic underscore. If you enjoy Mancini this should be a must have. Delightful. Nice that Varese took the chance on this. Another thread says the complete masters exist but that their condition is unknown. Sans expansion, this LP presentation is a treasure.
Great service from Varese: from the west coast to the east coast in three days flat.

Not nearly as well known as Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, or the Clouseau films, but a pure delight. One of Mancini's best. It was on my missing list. Not anymore. Thank you Varese. With the release of The List of Adrian Messenger and now this you have made me very happy. Keep them coming !

How about all the Riz Ortolani's non-Italian LPs? Is it possible to do one or more of them?

I have NO ideas on all those great Italian LP's, but please send all inquiries to the fine folks at Varese Vintave...

vintagesoundtracks@varesesarabande.com.

I'm glad so many people thought this score was just a delightful fun whimsical score. This was BRAND new to me, never saw the film nor heard any music, but it's just a nice listen. I wonder how many more little gems are out there by Mancini, that are like this beauty?!!

That's my thought as well, slint!

First on my wish list would be Ortolani's Christopher Columbus!
The 1985 Varese LP has never been released on CD as far as I know.
It's a gorgeous score--and Domingo's vocal rendition of the theme is awesome!

Watched the movie again this evening - I never understood why it is so unknown worldwide. It's one of the best and nicest comedies I've ever seen (and the bonus material on the german DVD is great - the US DVD from Warner Archives is not half as good as the european edition), and I think I've seen it about 30 times in the last 20 years - always a joy for me...and after seeing it again, I can assure you that the soundtrack release (both LP and CD) don't miss a single note - it's the complete and full score, and exactly as it is heard in the movie. Mancini knew that sometimes less is more...:-)

Which WHO IS KILLING THE GREAT CHEFS OF EUROPE? has the better audio quality----the Varese version or the Sony version in the cd set "Henry Mancini: The Classical Soundtrack Collection"?
