Has anyone here (presumably who live in Europe), seen this German Television mini-series that aired last year? It's due out soon and it caught my eye at Amazon with 3 superb reviews of it. I do not know (exactly) how it plays as Drama and if it's an 'equivalent' of say, 'Band of Brothers'?
Thanks!

I watched it last week, and found it to be surprisingly good. No doubt its battle scenes are influenced by Band of Brothers & Saving Private Ryan (grittiness, shaking handheld camera), you could say it's the german version of Band of Brothers, with some added storylines about the homefront in Berlin.

I haven't seen Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan - these films didn't interest me. But I've seen "Generation War' and it was TOTALLY BRILLIANT. I loved every single minute of it and would love to see it again.

Wonderful. Or should I say, "wunderbah"!!

THANK YOU for your responses and thoughts. Only 3 people reviewed it on Amazon and they raved about it as well. Sounds like an excellent gamble as a 'blind purchase' to me!

Apparently, the original German version was a TV miniseries, titled "Unsere Mutter, Unsere Vater," ("Our Mothers, Our Fathers"), which was longer than the English-language edited version.

I think I'd rather hold out for the German version, should it ever be available. However, though I understand some German, the current video on Amazon has no English subtitles. But, I'm sure, if producers think there's a market, a subtitled version will be released eventually.

In the meantime, the film got mixed reviews from U.S. critics, who complained there wasn't enough awareness of the Holocaust in the script. I have not seen the film; so I can't say. Apparently, the film was a big success when shown on German TV.

There's a very good summation of the film and its reception on Wikipedia.
