Peter Gunn
Who Is Killing The Great Chefs Of Europe?
Two For The Road
Arabesque
The Great Race

The Party
Visions Of Eight

with a few bonus tracks by James Galway, Andy Williams and Julie Andrews thrown in. Of particular interest are the premier CD issue of "Me, Natalie" and the inclusion of the rare "Just For Tonight" vocal version. This really looks like a nice package - particularly if the mastering will be done adequately.

I just hope that some rarer Mancini stuff like the "Man of the world" theme (and other single titles), the few concept albums still missing on CD, the UMG-owned soundtrack albums will also be released. Likewise original tracks previously unavailable and sonic upgrades on previously available material are welcome. "Music of Hawaii", for instance, sounds really POOR on the current CD...

Then this should definitely be something for you, Peter. I'm just a bit frustrated that we are now again buying "Who's Killing..." so shortly after the Varese release. I just wonder how the sound will be on these CDs. If Sony would be REALLY nice they would be using their Japan remasters, but I doubt frown

This required some extensive googling:

I don't understand the inclusion of Andy Williams recording of "The Second Time Around". It's from "High Time" but it's not a Mancini song. It's by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen. Somebody didn't do their homework.

If Sony would be REALLY nice they would be using their Japan remasters, but I doubt frown

So what's the story behind these Japan remasters?
Why are they so special?
And why would Sony not use the best sources for this release?

Any help regarding these questions would be highly appreciated! smile

Lots of the same stuff that has been readily available at a thrift store near you for decades and decades.

Six of these albums are also available inexpensively in the five-disc "Original Album Classics" series.

I'll save my Mancini allowance for stuff that I don't have, as I did with "Wait Until Dark," "The Thief Who Came to Dinner," "Charade" (film score) and others.

But hey, if you don't have this stuff, it's probably as good a way to get it as any, especially if your local thrift store doesn't carry vinyl.

Amazon lists this as being available on November 18 with a price tag of $89.98. These are not "soundtracks" but Mancini's re-arranged and re-recorded RCA albums. Aside from "Me Natalie" there really is nothing new here and I hope they omitted the voice overs which, in my opinion, just get in the way of the music.
Instead of Julie Andrews and Andy Williams recording of "The Second Time Around", which is not a Mancini song, they could have included Laura Devon's recording of "I Like The Look" and Dreamsville" which was an RCA single, 47-9256, from "Gunn".
I'm asking myself if I need this just for "Me, Natalie".
"High Time", Breakfast At Tiffany's", "Experiment In Terror", and "Hatari" are available on a Mancini 8 disc set, "Eight Classic Albums", which amazon lists for $6.49 in new condition.

According to Amazon's listing, "More Music from Peter Gunn" is missing.

According to the Mancini website, this was supposed to be an 11 disc set. The track "Peter Gunn" is from the movie "Gunn" not the original album. It features Plas Johnson on electric sax. I believe it was a Selmer Veritone.

Pretty standard type of thing for Sony. Not worth getting worked up about that it's a bunch of reissues, because this stuff DOES sell.

At this point, the main unknown is whether any of the previously available material will be remastered (and if it is, whether there is a noticeable improvement in the sound).

Good News: I've alreday gotten this wonderful Box-Set from amazon for an excellent price.
Bad News: Due to the Box arriving on the day of my move to a new place, I still haven't been able to listen to it nor will I be able to do so for the next couple of days.

So any thoughts on this release? smile
Is the general sound quality something to look forward to or not?
