Jarre's score sounds so splendid in stereo on the blu-ray release, the tapes must be in great shape for a CD release, right?
They're in amazing shape. Nothing like the pinched, mid-rangey sound of that old LP master.
Thank you Roger, if there ever was a hint this must be it. Like your spectacular 'The Ten Commandments' I am sure all involved will make this a great release.
SHOGUN has remained my favorite miniseries of all time. I remember it being a major event when I was a kid. I was very impressed by the acting, costumes, sets, directing and of course the music by Maurice Jarre! I wanted the soundtrack so badly but could not find it anywhere at the time. One day, I was shopping in a little Japanese import store and couldn’t believe my eyes when I found the RSO vinyl record. I still remember the artwork on the sleeve and the RSO red bull on the record. It provided me many years of enjoyment. I was excited when Intrada recently released it on CD and I was able to hear it in better sound quality for the first time. But I was puzzled why they did not take the opportunity to release more of the score. The series is about 9 hours long and only 38 minutes of score is presented on the album. Maybe they were not able to acquire the rights, as some people have mentioned. I would love to have the music when Lord Toranaga meets his brother in the forest. There is a long version of the samurai march, which is great! Lots of other beautiful pieces as well. So hopefully they can release an expanded set. I would buy it immediately!
I was unable to purchase the CD from Intrada however I have a copy of the vinyl and as mentioned in an earlier reply I often listen to the Shogun suite from the Tadlow release "Notre Dame De Paris: The Music of Maurice Jarre", hopefully this will be released soon and will be a dream come true. It would be interesting to know how much music there would be for the whole series, I suspect at least 3 discs worth.
If Intrada is indeed working on this release, they could very well be working with CBS, which owns Paramount's TV output. Intrada does have a track record releasing CBS soundtracks.
I do own the original score, however, If there was an expanded edition with enough material, i would purchase this instantly, its one of Jarre's finest scores.
