A suite from John Barry's Legend of the Lone Ranger will be featured on the forthcoming UK Blu-ray release from Network:

I remember seeming to like it when we were taken to the drive-in to see it in '81 or '82. Watched it again years later and it was SO. BORING. frown Although I find it amusing that Barry is mentioned on the cover while Klinton Spilsbury isn't. smile

If I were Klinton Spilsbury I'd be checking my contract about now!

I sense Intrada will be readying a release of this score on CD quite soon, given their association with MCA and Universal.
With only around 25 minutes of Barry music on the old LP (and some of that with narration and as part of the song), I'm sure an expanded/deluxe edition would be welcomed by the Barryati wink

Someone at Intrada said that the session elements are deemed missing after a long search. Thus, it seems a no-go on the expansion.

Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks Smitty. I guess the Barryati will have to wait.

Julian, thank you for the heads up concerning the blu-ray. I have the German Blu which is a mediocre transfer of the film.

The film is one of my all time guilty pleasures -- I sort of love it from beginning to end. And it has one classic film music sequence -- the taming of Trigger.

There is also a French Blu for those interested:

I'll keep a lookout for the Network release. Great news!

Good music by BARRY , but the main theme song by MERYL HAGGARD was weak and much too short. The melody deserved a better vocal rendition.

Yeah. But how does the great Barry's score for this compare with Zimmer's score for the last Lone Ranger?

Sorry folks, but I got hold of Barry's soundtrack in a sale as an LP years ago which cost me literally pennies. It didn't do much for me at the time, so I must dust it off and give it another go, whereas the latest film (and please don't even try and tell me the Milton Spilsbury film is the better one) and it's score is simply stupendous.

And, before anyone jumps on me for saying this, I am a Barry fan.

I like both scores. May good film music continue to ride along.

When I first heard John Barry's score, I was a bit perturbed by the 'country and western' flavor in the main title song.

So, at the outset, I wasn't a fan. But as scores often do, it grew on me.

Even to this day, I would not say it's one of John Barry's greatest or better scores. In a ladder of John Barry scores, it'd be in the bottom half not the top half.

Nevertheless, John Barry is one of those composers who pretty much always scored films with style and class. Nothing was rubbish, he was a natural for coming up with strong themes, and his orchestrations were always engaging. It's just that some scores proved more striking and remarkable than others.

One of the things I really love about John Barry is how he was consistently able to work strong melodies and harmonies into just about any score in any genre and sound dramatically apt all the time. And that's how I remember this score now: as one rooted in a melody strong enough that, in another life (and with a different lyric), it could have been a Broadway show tune.

When John Barry created a strong theme to work from — and he almost always did — well, it was like having a strong trunk and roots for the rest of the tree to grow and flower from.

On releases, well I'd certainly buy a 25 minute CD of LOLR, but maybe this is one of those that needs to be offered in a twofer to get the fans buying.

Cheers

I've been listening to the score suite from the recent Blu Ray release and can only say that in no way is the original LP a decent representation of the score. There is some great material here. I don't know, maybe if all of the narration tracks had have been included on the original album it would have felt less piecemeal. The way Barry interpolates William Tell into his theme is pure genius and downright catchy. Must have been Barry's descion to leave the Rossini references off the album. Such a shame. Anyway I'd sure love a proper, complete release.

Hi Steve H....could you give me your opinion of the print of the film. I have the German bluray already and am wondering what this new one looks like? Thank you....

Is this UK blu-ray non-zoned for play in US? Where is it available? At least want to look into it?

The picture looks fine but I can't tell you whether it's better or worse than the German.

The discs are unfortunately region locked.

Steve H is right though: the 27 minute album does not do this 50+ minute score justice.

Sadly, we must assume the original master recordings are gone the way of the do-do—otherwise Network would have used them instead of the stems to create the suite.
