Of course Serling wrote episodes of The Night Gallery. I doubt that the project would have interested him at all if he was only supposed to be the host.
In addition to writing scrippts he exercised editorial oversight on all the the scripts that were produced.
Rod Serling's influence reverberated throughout television for thirty years and is still being felt, I think, to some degree. What a brilliant mind he had.
