Shut up with the Sodom and Gomorrah thingie already!

STORIA DI UNA DONNA! STORIA DI UNA DONNA! STORIA DI UNA DONNA!

Do you want my bank account details so that you can transfer the Euros 30,000 needed for the recording? Or maybe I should do a Kickstarter!!!!

He, he....no, I trust you to choose your projects based on your own judgement and economic reality.

This is just a fan giving out some recommendations and heartfelt wishes, and a little bit of constructive pragmatisism! Based on your reply, though, I'm assuming this is not a project you would have any personal interest in?

Say whaat? I want every note of S&G! Even if the film sucks it's a masterpiece!

Yavar

Indeed we do. I am shocked - shocked I tell you - at suggestions for an incomplete version!!

Well sometimes it's worth raising a little shock just to determine how much interest such a re-recording would generate.

I have to admit that I was rather impressed with the City of Prague Philharmonic's previous recording of the 5-minute Overture from S&G, as conducted by Kenneth Alwyn. Based on James' and Nic's recent recordings of EL CID, THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and QUO VADIS, S&G would be quite an impressive recording. We can dream.

Yes, it is a wonderful score. But why re-record that score when there's already a 2 CD set drawn from original sessions? My preference would be to record something where the original tracks no longer exist.

Hmm. Perhaps you should tell us about your stereo. The sound quality on that set ranges from pretty awful to just dreadful, even by early 60s standards. In fact I'll never understand how they can get such a decent sound on some soundtracks (B-H, for one) and completely bugger up others. Although, having been in a few venues where the sound was absolutely putrid, maybe I do understand.

I'm interested in music, not sonics. Give me a choice between a new recording of S&G when the variable quality original tracks exist, and a new recording of a Rozsa score where no tracks exist and I'll take the latter.

Yes, that poor Digitmovies double CD sounds MUCH worse than the old Legend LP set does. A bootleg company put out an LP transfer CD some years ago, the one with the mammoth stone letters in Japanese characters, that sounds head and heels better than the Digitmovies release. It was richer sounding, less of that thin trebly overdriven quality, but still not the greatest. Maybe the brilliant QUO VADIS re-recording has me jonesing for more Rozsa. Barely a week goes by without me playing it and it just continues to surprise and captivate.

That may be a valid viewpoint (assuming I read it right) if the scores are of equal merit or value. But S & G is the last of Rozsa's great epic scores. He himself described it as 'a massive effort'. It's packed with (literally) fabulous themes--marches, dances, two love themes and background scoring to dialogue that simply doesn't deserve it. It's a masterpiece just from a dramaturgical point of view. Rozsa's ability to seamless follow the flow of the emotional byplay (such as it is) has never been better displayed. And of course the set pieces--battle by the dam, destruction of Sodom--each of those alone is worth the price of admission. The fact that it currently exists only in the poorest, most variable quality is a tragedy akin to that of the Spartacus tracks only being available in mono.

Not to mention that even the 2 CD set is incomplete if I understand correctly.

Personally, I would like to see some unrecorded scores of Rozsa.

One that I have been crying out for, for many years is That Hamilton Woman.
Too much music for just one cd- more like one and a half.

For a filler, we could have just the unrecorded music from Sodom and Gomorrah.
The uncut Main Title, the complete Battle music, the finale of Act One, etc.

I will second this comment! BRILLIANT score!! Beautifully performed and recorded (with suites from Ransom and Cassandra Crossing thrown in for good measure---see what I did there?).

SODOM and GOMORRAH is not very good, but I have always loved the score. Now maybe my aging ears are to blame, but the recording I have of it sounds ok to me. True, there are a few tracks that are a bit muffled or have distortion, but most of it sounds bright and clear and in good stereo. If they are going to spend money on a rerecording I want it to be THE VIKINGS. Lots of great music in this film as well, but the existing recording is tinny, flat, and mono. Sounds like it was recorded in my basement.

It seems a bit arrogant for me to say this in a thread where the producer of these CDs has chimed in, but it seems to me it doesn't really matter how much of "Sodom & Gomorrah" we would prefer. James Fitzpatrick has been fairly candid that those Rózsa CDs, wonderful as they are, just don't make economic sense for him. Of course, anything can change, but these "suggestion" (like maybe James hasn't heard of these scores) seem a bit odd to me.

And Jeff Bond, I need some clarity: I didn't buy "The Salamander," I was given it as a gift. Do I get an idiot exemption?

I would love to do SODOM...and any other Rozsa ... but the recordings I have done over the years have left me without any savings ... and I just can't keep expecting Luc at Prometheus to fund every idea I have. That being said... Luc did pay for 2 more scores recorded last September, of a more modest level than QUO VADIS or FALL OF ROMAN EMPIRE or CONAN or ALAMO ...well you cannot get much bigger than those! And plans are afoot for some more ... finances allowing!

Or, maybe I have done enough for preserving film music and should try and look after myself in my old age?

It's good having $$$ for old age but...try to do both. Follow your passion as well as your pocketbook. Your recordings are some of my prized possessions...QUO VADIS, TARAS BULBA, EL CID just to name a few.

The aforementioned Lady Hamilton would be a great recording. So would Jarre's Is Paris Burning? coupled with a complete The Professionals. Now that The Blue Max has been shelved(at least for now) how about In Harm's Way? (unless of course if the original tapes are available).

Looking forward to your next release(s)...

Oh no....please don't! At least not before you do STORIA DI UNA DONNA!

Seriously, though, I understand your predicament. Without knowing anything about the going-ons behind the scenes, I can imagine the cost (and work!) in putting these things together.

Darn. In that case I hope you have a sudden unexpected windfall of funds so in addition to S&G you can tackle Moross's The War Lord and Jarre's Jesus of Nazareth on your own Tadlow label. smile

That being said... Luc did pay for 2 more scores recorded last September, of a more modest level than QUO VADIS or FALL OF ROMAN EMPIRE or CONAN or ALAMO ...well you cannot get much bigger than those! And plans are afoot for some more ... finances allowing!

That's fantastic news! I noticed in the recording details that all three of your Goldsmith projects were recorded at various times in 2012. I don't suppose you could drop a hint whether any further Goldsmith was recorded last year in 2013? (I think you said there aren't any further Goldsmith scores that will be getting done *this* year.) Even if the Goldsmith series stops at three entries it's pretty amazing, but it'd be nice to know we have more to look forward to, and there are still some wonderful scores of his that don't survive in any recorded form. Well, I guess stuff like Black Patch and Face of a Fugitive you can hear in the film, but his rejected score for Babe (1995) only survives on paper until you and Luc come to the rescue!

Or, maybe I have done enough for preserving film music and should try and look after myself in my old age?

Hey! You told us you were doing The Blue Max in a couple years! smile At least we know you had Leigh Phillips work on it, but in the recent interview Luc gave he said he wasn't behind that one as he didn't think a new recording was necessary for a score with original tapes still surviving. Would that potentially be coming out on the Tadlow label instead of Prometheus a couple years from now (for the anniversary as you suggested)? Or should we give up our hopes on that one?

But seriously, do as much as you can while still taking care of yourself. Personally I'd be willing to go without a lot of luxuries in order to leave more to posterity, but would certainly still want to be comfortable. But I do hope you realize that these fantastic recordings you've overseen will live on forever for film music fans. The way people talk about Elmer Bernstein and Charles Gerhardt and what they did for the art form in the 70s with their re-recordings is the way people will be talking about you at Tadlow and Anna/Bill/John at Tribute 20 years from now. All lovers of great film music are forever in your debt.
