Just to clarify -- the iTunes version of LAIR is something SCEA threw together with (possibly) the composer's approval back in the day. This new 2 cd set is something Mr. Debney produced along with Dan Goldwasser for LLL Records. Like it or not, its as definitive as its gonna get. From the looks of the sales and all the feedback most people love this release. BTW, Mr Debney will be signing this cd next weekend (along with a host of his other works), Saturday April 26 at Creature Features in Burbank! MV

Wasn't sure whether to start a new thread, but in the interests of not overthreading the board, just wanted to add my appreciation for Lair, it really is as terrific as has been made out. If you miss properly written, complex, muscular action writing, this is the album for you... even the wailing woman (whatever happened to her as the affection du jour for film music?!) sounds great. Highly recommended.

Highly recommended. You took the words right out of my fingertips, Tom. What a massive beauty LAIR is. The bonus concert suite is a powerhouse as well, and the sound quality is much better than I'd expected after reading the comments posted above. The infrequent applause doesn't bother me in the least--it's a live concert, after all. If I were in the audience, I'd be clapping my ass off! I cannot recommend this album highly enough. A+ all around.

Regarding THE UNKNOWN KNOWN, I originally posted this comment in the Now Playing--May 2014 thread in reply to Thor, who stated that it's his favorite score of the year, but it bears repeating here on the chance that it might turn someone onto it who is ambivalent or indifferent (as I was at first): It's rather chameleonic, isn't it? If I'd listened to it before knowing what film it was written for, I'd guess a horror, thriller or fantasy. It sounds like it'd fit perfectly in any of those contexts, but a political documentary? In a blind taste test, I never would have guessed. I haven't seen the film and doubt I ever will, but as a stand-alone listen it's mesmerizing, beautiful, and more than a little bit creepy. The dialogue between percussion, piano and strings throughout the score is captivating if you listen attentively, and the percussion in some of the tracks (14, for example) even reminds me of Cliff Martinez, which gives it a bit of a Solaris vibe in places. The choral work gives it an almost liturgical air, adding to its aura misterioso. So yeah, to put it simply (which I do best), I really dig it, too.

It is astoundingly good. I heard people kept asking for an official release, but I never dreamed it would be THIS beautiful! It is guaranteed I will listen to this album many more times. Thank you, John Debney and LLL.
