I don't think, there was a thread called "RIP Basil Poledouris" on FSM board.

Quite right. Funny how memory plays tricks. Nonetheless, I still recall my feeling of "this isn't real."

The news tends to knock the stuffing out of me, starting with Franz Waxman in 1967, so I totally forget about it. There is nothing I want to savor about their deaths, only their lives and their music. This idea was reinforced when Elvis died on my birthday. Since then my birthday is known as Elvis's death day. Nothing that I relish and I tend to remember him more any other day of the year. This philosophy of mine, that I have been criticized for, extends to everybody. I think I was home from school when Jack Kennedy was killed and the days my parents died I only remember as seasons of the year, both winter.

I was cleaning the living room in my mother's house, and after I was finished, I came across the obituary column in the newspaper and read that Jerry Goldsmith had died. His death wasn't reported on the local news, though it did get some press coverage on Fox News. It was almost the equivalent of when John Lennon died.

FRED KARLIN [the sterile cuckoo, futureworld etc etc] was a morbid demise for me.In the twilight of his career, he did a book on film music. During the last year of his life I was contacting him through the mail on future ventures he was doing on such topics. Well after sending him something in the mail I was wondering why he was not responding. I found out a bit later when I read a older VARIETY issue, Fred had passed on a few weeks before.

The reporting of LON CHANEY JR'S death was very dramatic for me. He died a few days before the news media reported it.A personal crisis was the reason I will never forget it. At the time I was a kid and my mother was in the hospital having a serious operation, in which she did survive. I remember leaving the hospital in quiet vibes with my father going home saying little but wondering will the operation be a success or will we never see her again. I went into my room and read that Lon Chaney JR had passed away the combo events cleared my eyes out.

When J.B died , better known as JOHN BARRY. I did a little personal memorial of my own. Hearing about his passing, after work I decided to climb to the highest hill in my town which pretty much overlooked the center of town. When I reached it's peak I started humming some of John's beautiful themes he composed[WALKABOUT, THE LAST VALLEY ETC ETC]thinking all the time what his gift of musical talent did for the many moments of my life, making them nicer and sweeter. I can't judge the man on some moral plain since I did not know him personally but I hope John is in a better place now and want to thank him for making life better for me and apparently many others.R,I.P JOHN, where ever you are.

I'd gotten home after going to see Godsend, and switched on the TV... I brought up the news headlines on ITV's teletext (remember that?) and there was the headline about Jerry Goldsmith's passing.

What a sucky day.

My mom died of cancer two days before Jerry Goldsmith so I'm never thrilled when
these reminders come along every so often. But I do remember when my friend and
fellow film music geek showed up at my mom's wake on Friday of that week I greeted
him with "Uh, no, wrong room, you want the Goldsmith wake down the hall on the right."

I also remember being sad that I missed hearing about Henry Mancini's passing until
several days later. I had seen an interview with him after being diagnosed with cancer
when he was asked what he wanted for his 70th birthday and he replied "71."

I was reading a issue of VARIETY when I happened to check the obituaries and there it listed the death of JAMES BERNARD. A few years back I knew he did a new score for a classic silent genre film and I was hoping he would do more film scoring after he was away from the scene for a while. But it was not to be.. A man whose music deeply influenced me in my younger days with beautiful melodies that will never die and suspense music that added immeasurably to the films he scored. It was a shame he didn't do a lot more scores like many of our beloved film composers do, because he was great at what he did do. But he will always have a special place in my heart and mind of that era of talent that has left such enduring moments of warmth and enjoyment in this too often fleeting existence of life we are in.R.I.P JAMES. I know you know now with your beautiful music, good wins in the end. SAINT PETER, TERENCE and others I am sure will join you with that sentiment .

I was in a candy book store near Columbus circle in New York when I was reading DAILY VARIETY. There it was, OUR MAN JERRY has left us. Surprised? yes, I knew he was sick, but, yes it was a surprised. For a few minutes it made me realize something, all my life you would look and see credits with a GOLDSMITH MUSIC SCORE now it would be No more. A era has ended.

That is true, nor is PETER SELLERS, BORIS KARLOFF, but at the front of the thread I state if you like, name any personality who died in which you remember the moment. However all 3 great stars I mentioned did sing film music.

Lon Chaney Jr. isn't a film composer.

But he was apparently quite musical. According to IMDB he had a song, "Monster Holiday", on a Christmas Comedy LP.

When I read here over a year ago that MARVIN HAMLISCH had passed on I was a bit surprised. He was not that old . I saw him many times years ago in my life in New York, more then any other big film composer. He was everywhere in New York and to be honest, he was not stuck up at all despite his fame or talent. he always looked like a dentist to me. R.I.P Marvin, you were some composer.
