Damn that headline limitation, but I hope you understood it!

I recently acquired the LaLaLaLand presentation of Morricone's THE UNTOUCHABLES, but as you might have suspected, the complete and chronological arrangement is not for me. So I'm thinking about making an iTunes playlist based on the original A&M Records program instead (which makes up most of disc 2).

However, I was wondering if anyone of you savvy folks have made your own program that is somehow different than the A&M and that still works as a listening experience? And would be willing to share it with me (I suck at these things)?

Thanks.

Haha!

I'm not often one for favouring as-heard-in-the-film presentations over considered album presentations, but in this case I do. I don't think Morricone's original sequencing of The Untouchables works at all (as I recall it opens with the finale - which the whole score builds up towards - and ends on a note of unresolved suspense as a result, when the finale would actually resolve it).

If I had more time I'd probably work out a way of sticking some of the album arrangements of cues (where different) into the film order sequence, but I don't, and I think the film sequence actually works as a terrific listening experience.

Well, you're no help!

This thread actually gave me an idea to do another thread on 'album program suggestions' down the road -- which will especially relate to those releases that are only C&C and where no previous album program exists as a guide for those of us who prefer that. Let's all come together and play record producer (especially since I suck at it)!

Meanwhile, I welcome all suggestions regarding this particular score. Otherwise, I'll just roll with the A&M program.

This movie sucks, and the score is derivative of M's earlier mafia films. Stick with Morricone's late 60s/early 70s stuff and skip the corny stuff.

Something about this request has struck me as really funny.
Thor, by your own admission (twice just on this thread), you suck at putting together album presentations of your own. Logically, it would follow that you are therefore a bad judge of what makes a good presentation.
This would indicate to me that your dislike of C&C is not a matter of whether it is a good presentation or not (because you suck at it), but merely an ideological objection.
I think some C&C presentations are the best possible presentation (EL CID, for example), but some are not. Some album presentations are better than some C&C, others not. Personally, I think the JURASSIC PARK album is awful…it would work far better as C&C.
On the other hand, E.T. is an excellent album but I don’t like the way the C&C works.

I have to ask, are there any C&C presentations you like, or are you really an inflexible ideologue?

As for THE UNTOUCHABLES, just put the Main Title first and the End Title last and you’ve got a respectable album program (but the C&C is better).

A few, like ROCKY IV. But very rarely.

But this was more about a suggestion of album programs/playlists for THE UNTOUCHABLES than another debate on that particular issue.

I can't remember where I got them, but decades ago I ended up with 5 or 6 sealed copies of the LP for this soundtrack, and gave a couple away but don't recall ever even playing one of the LPs.

I haven't done this with the Untouchables, but when I make suites like this, my method is typically to move the complete version into a playlist, play it all the way through, then delete cues that aren't catching my interest. Then I arrange what's left into some quasi-logical order, so that the sequence has some sense of variation and dramatic build. It sounds like a lot of work, but it's honestly the sort of thing you can do absent-mindedly while working on other things.

That's essentially how I've traditionally arranged most of my own compilations, whether it be a soundtrack or a vocal album, the exception being shows and classical, which I wouldn't change. For decades I've prided myself on being able to create more effective sequencing, so, obviously, I'm NOT one of the purists who insist on a soundtrack being in the precise order in which the music is heard in a film. (I can understand why some prefer that, but it's never been a priority for me.)

Sure it would.
(See, I can do the brain-dead contrarian response that adds nothing to the discussion too.)
But Thor is right, he wasn't asking for a debate on this, so I'll bow out.

Yours is the old why don't the critics try making a movie? "logic". You don't need to be able to create something to be able to assess it. You can be well-versed in the art and aesthetic of cinema without making a movie. You can learn to assess the integrity of structures without having the architectural or construction prowess to build them. I wouldn't know where to start to design or sew a new garment, but I can judge whether one fits or functions properly. So what you're saying does not follow.
