Haha! I'm not often one for favouring as-heard-in-the-film presentations over considered album presentations, but in this case I do. I don't think Morricone's original sequencing of The Untouchables works at all (as I recall it opens with the finale - which the whole score builds up towards - and ends on a note of unresolved suspense as a result, when the finale would actually resolve it). If I had more time I'd probably work out a way of sticking some of the album arrangements of cues (where different) into the film order sequence, but I don't, and I think the film sequence actually works as a terrific listening experience.

Something about this request has struck me as really funny. Thor, by your own admission (twice just on this thread), you suck at putting together album presentations of your own. Logically, it would follow that you are therefore a bad judge of what makes a good presentation. This would indicate to me that your dislike of C&C is not a matter of whether it is a good presentation or not (because you suck at it), but merely an ideological objection. I think some C&C presentations are the best possible presentation (EL CID, for example), but some are not. Some album presentations are better than some C&C, others not. Personally, I think the JURASSIC PARK album is awful…it would work far better as C&C. On the other hand, E.T. is an excellent album but I don’t like the way the C&C works. I have to ask, are there any C&C presentations you like, or are you really an inflexible ideologue? As for THE UNTOUCHABLES, just put the Main Title first and the End Title last and you’ve got a respectable album program (but the C&C is better).

I can't remember where I got them, but decades ago I ended up with 5 or 6 sealed copies of the LP for this soundtrack, and gave a couple away but don't recall ever even playing one of the LPs.

I haven't done this with the Untouchables, but when I make suites like this, my method is typically to move the complete version into a playlist, play it all the way through, then delete cues that aren't catching my interest. Then I arrange what's left into some quasi-logical order, so that the sequence has some sense of variation and dramatic build. It sounds like a lot of work, but it's honestly the sort of thing you can do absent-mindedly while working on other things.

That's essentially how I've traditionally arranged most of my own compilations, whether it be a soundtrack or a vocal album, the exception being shows and classical, which I wouldn't change. For decades I've prided myself on being able to create more effective sequencing, so, obviously, I'm NOT one of the purists who insist on a soundtrack being in the precise order in which the music is heard in a film. (I can understand why some prefer that, but it's never been a priority for me.)
