If I am not mistaken, Showboat took the Best Picture Oscar the year King Kong was released, which is richly ironic considering the Warner Archive release of Showboat is the first since the Laserdisc. I think King Kong was among the first thousand titles to be released in every format. from Betamax to Blu-ray. Folks love what folks love, and the Oscar vote seldom influences their choices.
