I recently started purchasing Blurays in steelbook and I'm a bit hooked.
These cases give a collector's edition look to the Bluray, and make it seem even more precious.
I especially purchase steelbooks of movies that are precious to me from my childhood, movies that I grew up with and loved!

Would it be a crazy idea to have a steelbook case for soundtrack cds too?
How would that sound to you?
I'd personally think I would be all over this idea!

I imagine it would be far too costly to produce and would mean an increase of the price... which is why I always buy the regular blu-ray case edition if one is available. Weren't there some Italian horror scores that got dvd case releases? Anyway, as I don't want to expand my cd shelves, if they can keep it within that size, I might consider it.

yes, I meant steelbook in CD case size.
(maybe with embedded fonts too etc.)

well, many steelbook BLurays may drop in price, but yes, the fact that they would be more expensive would make it an item for collectors.
I personally would buy steelbooks of these for starters, because they were the first soundtracks I ever had in my childhood (in tapes copied from cds/LPS as I didn't have a record or cd player)

Dracula (kilar)
Hook
The piano
Batman Returns
The Age of innocence
The Last of the mohicans
Trois coleurs bleu
Free Willy
Dances with wolves

Imagine Hook, in a black steelbook cd case, with an embedded title and/or hook (like the Dick Tracy above)

Yeah, I think that the vendors are paying very - very little for those plastic jewel cases, probably much less than a dollar, whereas these metal cases are probably quite a lot more than a dollar with the art work on them. I would imagine a $5 upcharge at least for a metal case. I suppose they could do a limited pressing of those, but I am not sure how much market is for them. I mean the limited runs are already 3000 typically for the whole planet, so how many of those would buy a metal case version? I would think less than a few hundred at most.

I think for the movies the cases are very nice, but I never really understood the reason for buying them myself, I have so many movies that all just sit lined up like books on a shelf, never really displayed in the open to enjoy the case. However, that said, I can see that within 5 to 8 years the whole disc market is going to become very specialized, as the mass of humanity continues to be corralled like sheep into complying with streaming and downloading movies more and more. Brick and mortar media outlets are getting stripped out of existence, it will be almost all online sources for physical media soon. I already get almost all of mine from Amazon. Anyway, I can see a future where 2k or 4k discs are items for clientele like us on FSM, a select community of picky buyers, and in that market you could see labels doing some pretty interesting things, like special cuts that only come on physical discs, with special packaging. Mondo and Twilight Time are some present examples of this.

The best idea of all is a combined blu ray and soundtrack CD in a special case, like they did with the really lovely Lawrence of Arabia package. I would be all over that, even for some of those terrible movies that Jerry scored.

Oh and by the way KonstantinosZ, anyone that likes Dick Tracy is pretty cool, what a great movie.

I have got the Steelbook 2-disc cd-case for Man of steel (Superman), which is truly awesome.

Oh, I didn't know there was already one.
I saw some google images, and yes, it seems great!

yes, I love it!!! Great aesthetics! (and score/songs of course).
I saw it at the cinema when i was 10 years old.
(i wish we had extras though in the bluray with documentaries, deleted scenes etc.. There is nothing!)
I also consider this my best steelbook. It's so classy!

Personally never been interested in specialty packaging of any kind. Be it steelbooks or oddly shaped box sets. They stick out like a sore thumb and usually don't display well with the rest of my collection.
(Ahem Varese and their expanded Star Trek 09 release) Also don't care to put out the extra money for those releases. I have a backlog as it is.

The few steelbooks I own have gotten scratched quite easily, despite my best efforts. They look nice at first, but they're not really worth the extra money for me.

The steelbook collector's market is insane. There's a sub-culture out there that collects them, regardless of the movie, from all over the world, and keep them in shrinkwrap as an "investment".

Some steelbooks are lovely. Arrow's editions of Big Trouble In Little China, Lifeforce, Time Bandits and the forthcoming The Burbs all preserve the theatrical poster art. But some are tinny and tacky.

As much as I love the idea, I simply don't want to get caught up in buying things JUST for the packaging, which is the temptation with "unique" or "limited" cases. I'm already a little obsessed about first edition slipcases which is equally mad.

So no, I wouldn't promote steelbooks for soundtracks.

Steelbooks are awesome. I don't go crazy collecting them just to have them, but if a movie I really like is available in one, I'll usually get it. I have a few DVDs and several Blu-rays in steelbook cases. Love them!

I also have the steelbook Man of Steel soundtrack, however, I noticed that in that regard it's a little larger than a regular jewel case. Steelbook DVD/Blu-ray cases really aren't much bigger than standard ones, but with CDs they seem to be a little more oversized. So it hangs over the edge of the shelf a bit, and if you accumulated many they would ultimately take up more shelf space width-wise. But, I don't think it would hurt if certain special edition soundtracks came in then. They are really nice.

I've never really been that bothered regarding the packaging of CDs or DVDs, I would normally just buy the cheapest I find. I certainly wouldn't pay extra for a Steelbook version. Most of my DVDs, after I buy them I discard the packaging and put them in a leather wallet case anyway. For a small disc, the packaging takes up way too much room and I don't really need it. There is a few exceptions to this.

I think you're much more likely to get that for scores for current hit films by current hit composers (e.g. Zimmer and Man of Steel).

For 'retro' releases like those Intrada, La-La-Land, etc, deal in, I think this would be an expense they just don't need.

It's a nice idea but if it's a choice between getting Steelbooks and getting more CDs out, I'd go for getting more CDs out.

Cheers

I had the habit of replacing my dvd collection with blu-rays until I discovered the hobby of.........the movie soundtrack. Now I don't hardly watch any movies but listen to them. And Yes, I probably would fork out extra cash if it is a score I really, really love like, Last of the Mohicans, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or Conan the Barbarian. Only if it was about $5.00 more though.

Thinking about this some more, the labels who are currently doing the collector's edition releases are those who are doing specialty vinyl (like waxwork etc.). Maybe they might consider it to do a CD release in steelbook? For a title like Poledouris' Robocop or Fiedel's Terminator for instance this could be cool.

They could re-issue osts with steelbooks in limited edition quantities (eg. 1000)..

Zavvi is doing exactly this with Blurays, and many of these steelbooks go OOP and are sold for much higer prices at ebay.

By the way, i just received my German Roger Rabbit Steelbook (with a glossy finish) and it's GORGEOUS!!
