"Both the archive materials and the aesthetics of the movie been ingested and reproduced. The team talks excitedly of how they wanted to make Weyland-Yutani corporate videos look analogue, fuzzy. So they made the clips and recorded them on to old VHS machines, then bashed them around with magnets until when played back they skipped and blurred. The audio designers tell us about how they found unlabelled reels in the 20th Century Fox Alien archives that turned out to be hours of cockney sound designers making weird sound effects. They took the entire original soundtrack and rerecorded it with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, some of whom were present the first time the music was recorded with original composer Jerry Goldsmith."

Interesting! I personally like revisiting these universes in video games and knowing the Goldsmith score is there is definitely a plus!

Cool! I haven't seen the National Philharmonic Orchestra credited on anything since the mid 90s. Apparently an orchestra of freelance players contracted by the late Sidney Sax.

Intriguing. I'm guessing this might be done for cost reasons - i.e. it being cheaper to re-record the score than to license the music? It would be really interesting to hear the re-recording especially given the challenging nature of some of the effects Jerry came up with.

Edit: More info here: http://www.develop-online.net/analysis/18-things-we-learned-about-alien-isolation-last-night/0189188. Looks like it's not as simple as a straight up re-recording....

Among the source material provided by 20th Century Fox, Creative Assembly also had access to the original soundtrack. Some of this iconic music is included in Alien: Isolation, but not necessarily how you remember it. The team re-recorded several of the original cues with a full orchestra, including some of the musicians that worked on the first film’s soundtrack.

“The trouble is the soundtrack is so well known that people will know exactly what each cue means,” explained Lindop. “So we created new score elements that sit within this score system. We had to layer it carefully – if your survival is based on what you hear, hearing the strings section at Shepperton is really not that helpful.”

Another crucial element of Alien's Haunted-House-In-Space feel is its sound design, and it's here that Al Hope and his team are doing some serious work to ensure the integrity of the atmosphere is maintained. Hope explains that, having secured the licence to use Jerry Goldsmith's original score, The Creative Assembly's sound designers then set about analysing and expanding upon it in order to create a 120-minute soundtrack to grace the finished article.

"As was the case with a lot of the first steps on this project, it was about taking this stuff that we love and expanding on it in a way that is in-keeping with the film," Hope explains. "There was this whole phase of deconstruction in terms of both visuals and audio and really trying to understand what makes this an Alien sound; to establish the DNA and motifs that make it what it is and that any fan would recognise."

This has involved creating a soundtrack that can be dynamically pitched against the on-screen action, and calling upon the services of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (the very same that lent its talent to the original Alien theme) to record the additional tracks.

Found this on the IMDB page of composer Christian Henson, which hints at his participation:

As of February 2014, Christian is putting the finishing touches to his score for Jon Wright's blockbuster 'Our Robot Overlords' and also to a posthumous collaboration with Jerry Goldsmith for a blockbuster production, which is soon to be announced.

It doesn't surprise me, as if anyone's seen the British horror film he scored, Storage 24, it's got quite a few references to Alien hidden in there.

With the game rolling out now - has anyone played or experienced the score ? Any news on an official soundtrack release yet?

I haven't played it, no. I don't have the stomach, skill or interest to play such games, really.

However, I did spend 3 hours and 30 minutes watching this video:

...which contains the cut scenes and most crucial gameplay sequences, being the ALIEN buff that I am. It looked absolutely brilliant. The composer -- whoever that is -- combined his own score in an organic way with Goldsmith's original (which is already organic to begin with).

My favourite part was unquestionably the exploration of LV-426 where we see a couple of new things in and around the derelict spacecraft which will be in my mind the next time I see the movie.

I just saw a couple billboards for this game and remembered how stunning the gameplay and visuals looked in that preview video. What platform is this for? I've been thinking of getting either an Xbox or Playstation and the chance to walk through Alien could help make my mind.

And yes, as a huge fan of Goldsmith's score, I would love a release of Isolation's Goldsmith-inspired music.

I'm playing this at the moment, the score is mood-heavy, light on composition, but quite rich as far as the soundscape goes. It's built around many of Goldsmith's motifs - the film version of the main title is the most prominent theme, with many of his individual sounds and phrases cropping up throughout - but I wouldn't say it's dominated by them.

Overall I think it's a great score if you like that kind of thing, and I would love to see a cd release. From what I've seen on game forums I think there's a big enough demand, although their preferred format might be digital, there's no doubt that the franchise is as popular as ever among young people.

The game too I think is pretty great, although it is quite punishing, not really designed for casual play, there is an easy mode that probably lets you coast through if you just want to see the thing, but don't take my word for that.

It is very intense, and the atmosphere is outstanding, it takes place on the same class of vessel as the Nostromo, so everything has been lovingly recreated, the sounds, the interior, the lighting. Definitely the best looking game i've seen on the new consoles.

I am not a gamer but your post makes me want to invest in a system just to play it. Would also love a release of the score. From what I read they went to great pains to get the score right and pay homage to Jerry.
