A rather HUGE improvement can be made by bringing the DRACULA tracks into a good audio editor and using an EQ to boost the frequency range right around 4.8K by about 4 - 5 db with a Q of 2 (assuming you are using a parametric EQ). Suddenly it does not sound nearly so muffled plus the brass sounds richer and even the lower strings have more bite.
This is the result of playing around with the files for just 15 minutes. There is some tubbiness in the bass I could probably go after when I get some more time...
Audacity is a good free wave editor that has built in EQ functions.
I was just screwing around with some of those frequency changes you suggested in Audition. It does indeed sound a lot crisper and the muffled sound is gone. I don't even have any mastering experience. So a proper remastering would work wonders for the original album tracks. But gee it does show up that Varese CD. It really does sound bad.
I simply use Audacity for cutting together some nice action suites from long tracks not suitable for mobile listening. For this purpose it's easy to just view the amplitude and make your start and stop stuff, then hiding your crappy edits with fade in- and out gimmicks .
However, I'm completely lost with EQ parameters. Would be cool to keep us informed for better or final results .
