I didn't see "Dune" on that list at all, though I went looked for it several times.
If "Dune" is there, then I've read 42.
It's an odd list, though, in that, one listing is "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," by C.S.Lewis, but another is "The Chronicles of Narnia," which includes "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe."
And, while "The Lord of the Rings" (3 vols.) is one listing, different "Harry Potter" books are listed, rather than grouping them as one item.

After going through the list up to #600 I finally gave up. No listing for Thomas Pynchon? No "Gravity's Rainbow"? How can that be?

As the editors noted in their comments, "and we didn't want the list to feel like homework." So I gather they did not include "difficult" reads. The list just looks like a way to promote Kindle and Goodreads. So the list, for me, has little in intent to do with literature -- I'm inclined just to see it as promotional.
Still, some great books in there. I've read 31 of them.
But really -- "homework"? God forbid we should challenge ourselves.
