Pretty cool that a Bond score won. Too bad he's not nominated for an oscar. YOU know JohnF...you know of Google..or even maybe Oscar.org...it will help you correct your thoughts..before you post Things you don't nothing about... Thomas Newman is nominated for Saving Mr. Banks. Thanks

At first I thought this was a joke post, suggesting the board is running so slow we're just now receiving posts about last year's Grammys. But hey, congrats to Thomas Newman and the James Bond franchise for the recognition.

Must say that I am not that happy with this Grammy for Newman. I think most people in here would agree that the Bond scores are something special, especially the Barry ones, even Conti`s, Martin`s, Hamlisch`s and Arnold`s efforts. But compared to these, Skyfall was ok, but nothing very special. And nothing that deserved an award. I am so afraid that giving awards to efforts like this will make the producers think that what is adequate is "the best", and not allow others to step in. I think Newman has shown us what he can do, but I expect he will be back for the next with Mendes directing again, and being nominated for the Oscar ,getting the Grammy etc. Which is a pity, since he will contribute nothing new. As was the problem with a lot of Arnolds wall to wall action musiser. I would prefer Arnold to Newman, but very much like to se Desplat do a Bond. The Grammys and Oscars are more about who is flavour of the month, and not necceasasrily the best quality and most deserving. And it`s an American thing. Why would John Barry never get nominated for a Grammy or Oscar for any of the Bond films? And why was Hamlisch nominated for TSWLM? He was certainly the flavour of the month in the US back in 1977.

Why would John Barry never get nominated for a Grammy or Oscar for any of the Bond films?. Barry won a Grammy for Goldfinger in 1965.

Let's see: You're upset that Newman won but you contend that the awards are absolute crap. Tastes and trends change over the decades. Barry's Bond years are long gone, but recall, please, that he was also doing other, more sedate, movie work AND winning Oscars for them...such things as "Born Free" and "The Lion in Winter" during his biggest Bond years. For whatever reason, the music branch of the Academy did not consider the Bond scores worthier than the other scores that actually received nominations, but they certainly recognized Barry's gift for scoring. There is no accounting for taste, my friend. That is readily apparent in every year when recordings are up for awards and others are left in the dust.
