Hi everyone,

This budget CD release of The Deep does NOT contain the OST tracks. It's just a single CD of the original Casablanca LP program but it DOES contain the associated Casablanca records' single release of 'Down Deep Inside' which had the 'Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years' theme on the B-side.

Therefore, still essential for Barry completists.

I have the feeling this budget release is just a remastered from vinyl presentation, in spite of the extra track i think if soundquality is important to you, you better stick to the Intrada release.
Or they only remastered the extra track and copied the Intrada cd.

Huh!

Isn't that the first time it has been on cd?

Hasn't got the White House-theme.

But this cannot be one of the releases under the european copyright law. The Deep was produced in 1977. So this is probably a properly licensed release of the old album.

I have no idea about the licensing or mastering. If anyone has information (I'm sure you'll agree having a feeling is only having a feeling) I'd welcome that.

That's what I'm thinking. UMG licence out their recordings all the time, & seeing as it's already been released on CD it may be a wee bit cheaper to licence (but I don't really know how these things work). I have the Intrada & find that I never listen to the original score these days, just the LP version, but then I did have that LP for many years & sort of got used to it.

Is this going to have the cut "The White House Years" on it ? I would buy it just for that.

Hi all,

This upcoming release of THE DEEP isn't a budget release; it's due from Big Break Records' Hot Shot imprint. Big Break, part of the Cherry Red Group, is one of the U.K.'s top catalogue soul music/R&B/dance labels and all of its releases are remastered and fully licensed from the rights holders. BBR is known for its high standards of packaging, design, liner notes and bonus material, and I've no doubt that this upcoming reissue of the original album presentation of THE DEEP will serve as a fine complement to Intrada's release. The label should release official information as to the bonus tracks soon, as Amazon isn't always accurate, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that rare single on there.

Hope this helps!

The big question is, of course, if UMG would be able to provide the tapes for the single tracks. We are being told that there were additional tracks during the "Concert Barry" sessions - none of them are on the CD re-issue. Similarly, "Themependium" is a Columbia release - yet many of the Columbia single tracks have been mastered from 45s frown

Thank you for the reference, Stephen. It would be great news if so ... that theme was one of my favourites many years ago ... the only copy I have of it now is a DVD rip of an old cassette recording which, I believe, had been copied from a Reel to Reel tape, taken from a 45rpm vinyl single, courtesy of Richard and Robert!

A wonderful theme!

received my copy today.

Wonderful release, informative liner notes, lots of photos (including John Barry, the original singles). Highly recommended.

I've received my copy yesterday and had the time to compare it with the Intrada release.

The Intrada presentation sounds - by far - much better than Hot Shot Records'!

Take for instance the first track "Return to the sea 2033 A. D." Give it close listen from 9:30 to 10:30 and you will clearly hear the difference. HSR didn't even bother to remove clicks and pops. They are very much present. For example, you hear a heavy one on 10:02/03. It's is a pity.

Or, you listen to the instrumental version of the "Theme from The Deep". Right from the beginning of this track you hear that Intrada did a much better restoring job than HSR did. I doubt, HSR did anything in this department at all.

But, we now have the bonus material with "The White House Years" on CD which is quite good. If you like the music style with all the disco beat that almost burry the main melody...

The 12" disco version of the Donna Summer track (#7 on the CD) sounds much louder now than the track as released years before on the excellent Barry compilation "Lounge Legends".

The real assets of the HSR CD are the liner notes by Christian John Wikane. Also of note, the pictures / photographs in the booklet with the differt cover art. That is very nice indeed.

I would say, this CD is only for the die hard Barry and/or Summer fans. And I think you are far better served with the Intrada double CD set (with better photos from the film in the booklet anyway - although their notes (by Julie Kirgo that is) cannot really compete with the others).

With clicks and pops - you mean like on vinyl? Does this release mention UMG anywhere?

I would not go as far as saying they used vinyl. HSR also claims having used master tapes.

The CD fully credits UMG as licensor. I do not think it is a boot judging from that appearance.

This isn't a boot. Hot Shot Records seems to be a legitimate umbrella label with a licensing deal to release Casablanca's back catalogue.

I haven't done a very close (headphones) listen, but if this is a vinyl transfer, it's a good one. Personally, I thought it sounded like it came from master tapes.

Cheers

I have to agree with Stephen Woolston. The sound quality for this release is very good. I could not hear any anomalies. It is a legitimate release under the auspices of the Cherry Red label. Most importantly, it states that it is sourced from the master tapes. Why else mention tape vault research and original tape transfers? Bootlegs don't bother with such details. The liner notes and graphics form a very well assembled package in respect of the history of Casablanca and the production of the soundtrack LP. My only complaint is the paucity of information about the White House Years 45 B side itself.
I don't know what Barry was thinking about adding a disco beat overlay to this at the time. I assume that he just wanted to get his music out because he was rightly proud of his achievement with Eleanor and Franklin. In my opinion, the score for the two films is one of Barry's last unreleased gems. Personally, I have the main and end credits, which I ripped from the VHS tape I have of E& F but would welcome a release of the complete score. Meanwhile, the curiosity of the White House Years B side is better than nothing.

The disco beat is probably because Casablanca required a Side-B to the "Down, Deep Inside" single but required whatever it was to be a disco arrangement. Maybe Barry thought it was a way of getting his theme out there.

Personally, I like it, although we could do with getting the original out sometime.

Speaking of "Concert Barry" and John Barry and his orchestra - but sorry otherwise a bit off-topic...
I heard playing in a mall somewhere a non-OST (not Nic Raine either) version of Lion in Winter theme that sounds definitely like it's done by John Barry and his orchestra but can't seem to find it anywhere.
Anyone know what album this is on?

EDIT: Found a youtube link to it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5nRsr6oxSc

Album: The Film Music of John Barry.

Oh - back on topic - for White House Years, I simply got the movies themselves way back when.
Same for Willa, Touched by Love that sort of stuff.
I'm sort of a completist myself but not terribly rabid.
The Intrada double album for the Deep was so great that I'd hate to get another just for the 1 track.
Mono never sounded so good!

Wish List: Be nice to see an OST of Raise the Titanic...

Hi!

The Intrada cd is very expensive. Is this "new" release worth getting? I have not seen the film in many years but I saw a clip on youtube with the opening music, which I think is very beautiful. Is that music included in this release? Theme from the Deep?
