Yeah, but in the case of HELLBOY 2 and TERRA NOVA, the main composers included and sanctioned the additional help, you know? PROMETHEUS is more of a murky situation... It seems that Harry Gregson Williams was called in for some fix-it work after Marc Steitenfeld did some recording, but they're both obviously from the Zimmer Collective and might have been cool with the situation.

Of course there are lots of examples in both directions, though... Goldsmith didn't include any of John Debney's contribution to LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION on the CD, nor did he include any of the Joel McNeely material on AIR FORCE ONE. He did, however, include some of Joel Goldsmith's music from FIRST CONTACT, so... who knows?

We'll have an answer in two months, I guess. I'm still telling my bookie in Vegas to put my money on "just Tyler" though.

I'm surprised that none of you have mentioned one of the most popular theories regarding Danny Elfman's credit on the "Avengers: Age of Ultron" poster. Many people have speculated that Elfman may have created the haunting renditions of "No Strings on Me" heard in the trailers, and which may appear at some point in the actual movie.

I had not heard this popular theory, but now that I have, I think it's extremely unlikely. The arrangement is fine, but most capable film composers could have done it. I find it hard to imagine that they hired Elfman, at great expense, to do this arrangement of another composer's melody (and without any of us knowing, though the trailer's been out for four months now). I also can't believe that Elfman would do a trailer arrangement for a film he's not even scoring (and that the studio wouldn't just turn to Tyler, who could easily do it). And then Elfman getting a "music by" credit for an arrangement?

Me, I don't think so.

But welcome to the board, hbenthow! (That is, assuming you're not that other fellow.)

A good point, I suppose.

But welcome to the board, hbenthow!

Thank you.

(That is, assuming you're not that other fellow.)

What other fellow?

I just signed up here today. Before, I only read the posts here without posting any myself.

What other fellow?

I apologize for my cynicism. There are a few people, actually, who've been banned from the board -- notably, a friendly pony and a hunter from the future -- who insist on creating new screen names and posting inflammatory remarks. Your post was not inflammatory, so I should not have suspected.

A sincere welcome!

Yes, welcome!

You didn't start the post by saying Goldsmith was savior of film music and would rather listen to his farts than any junk by Brian Tyler, so it's safe to say you aren't the troll we've had trouble with. I hope you enjoy the board, interaction with film score fans, and hearing about all the upcoming or previously released CDs.

But back on topic, I am totally looking forward to this score. Tyler can create a huge and epic sound plus memorable themes, so I hope he adds that to Silvestri's already stellar Avengers theme.

do you think they will re-use Silvestri's theme?
Somehow this did never occur to me. Would be fantastic, and Tyler did reuse Cap's theme in Thor 2, but the theme from Cap 1, which was not in Cap 2. Makes sense in that Loki is doing that exagerated patriotic parody to use that origin-theme by Silvestri.
Tyler's Thor theme and Iron Man theme will return I guess, or what do you think?
Cap's theme from 1 or 2 and the Avengers theme also?

Just wondering.
Are there quotes by Tyler about it?

I actually found a relevant quote by Tyler:

"Hair looks good. Yeah, Brian Tyler's hair looks real good. Top'll be up today no doubt. Top will be UP. Don't want to mess with perfection, no no no. [into ringing phone] Hey, you get that picture of my hair I just sent? FUCK yeah. Hey, have some original score music compositions composed by the time I get there so I have something to turn in. No, I'm having my teeth whitened. Uh, YEAH, I THINK I know a thing or two about teeth whitening, are you joking? You have to keep goin' in. You know what, why don't you just let me be Brian Tyler, and you can be...you can be Brian Tyler, but only while you are additionally arrangementing. Just write down some of those musical notes and I'll handle the smiling. Leave them blank and I'll sign them when I come in. [hangs up phone] Additional Arrangementers... [looks into mirror once more] Fuck yeah."

In his Variety interview, he was asked if he would use existing themes from the various Marvel movies in his score, and replied, "That’s the goal for sure. You have to build in nostalgia and do it upfront so you can relate to it." So it sounds as if some themes from the existing Marvel movies (maybe even Silvestri's Avengers theme) might return.

Is it possible that Elfman is writing the music for Doctor Strange, and it's actually him (rather than Spider-Man) that cameos in this film? It could be that Elfman has written a cue or two for that character. I think he would be a great fit for Doctor Strange

Possibly, but unlikely. When has another composer been brought in so far to do special music for an end-credits scene? Never, at least so far. Plus, I hardly imagine poster credit for a piece of music that's maybe 1 minute. I think that the explanation that he was hired just for some general additional pieces makes the most sense and is the simplest, most logical (and therefore most probable) explanation.

I thought Chris Young, who has been working with Scott Derrickson for a while now, pretty much had a lock on Strange.

I found something interesting (albeit very speculative) that may have a connection to Danny Elfman's work on "Avengers: Age of Ultron". On February 20, 2015, Elfman made an appearance at the "From the Top" event at the King Center in Denver, Colorado. He didn't stay long, because he had to catch a flight.

http://www.ucdadvocate.com/npr-and-danny-elfman-at-the-king-center/

The next day, there was a post on a Danny Elfman Internet forum claiming that it had been said that Elfman couldn't stay long because he was busy "saving" a summer movie. One or two members of the forum speculated that the movie in question may be "Age of Ultron". Here's the thread:

http://elfman.cinemusic.net/forum/read.php?7,39879

Also, here's a link to another thread in the same forum in which the same speculation is brought up again:

http://elfman.cinemusic.net/forum/read.php?7,39884,39904

And a thread on the MainTitles.net forum featuring similar speculation:

http://www.maintitles.net/forum/discussion/141/38/

Of course, there's no guarantee that the movie in question is "Avengers: Age of Ultron", but it's a possibility. If it is, "saving" it could mean several things. Perhaps Joss Whedon was unsatisfied with some of Brian Tyler's score, and brought in Elfman as the musical equivalent of a script doctor. Or, perhaps the movie was re-edited and needed some new music composed, and Tyler wasn't available. In any case, this does bring up more intriguing possibilities of what the "additional music by Danny Elfman" credit could mean.
