For my money that, James Bond and Jaws are the only themes to have truly penetrated contemporary consciousness. Play Gone with the Wind, Exodus, Three Coins in the Fountain, Whatever, to the man in the street and he'll look at you funny. But those three themes...oh yeah, the space movie, the shark, 007. Hell, even rappers would recognise them. Greg Espinoza    Posted:   Dec 27, 2013 - 11:57 PM     By:   SchiffyM   (Member) If we're talking the most recognizable to an average American -- not a film student, not a score collector, but what is known in the parlance of test marketers as "movie non-avoiders" -- I think the acid test is whether that theme could be used as a punchline on "The Simpsons" or "Saturday Night Live" (or maybe be played by Paul Shaffer during a Letterman bit) and get a laugh of recognition. There really aren't that many, and I think some here overestimate the recognizability among the general public of such themes as Elfman's "Batman" or Goldsmith's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." Maybe the "history of the ring" theme from "Lord of the Rings," if used in the proper context. Maybe. A lot of these themes are also receding from our collective consciousness. "Tara's Theme" probably resonates more as "big old fashioned film theme" than as the main melody from "Gone With The Wind." "The Magnificent Seven" is similarly "Hollywood western" but not necessarily associated with that film.
