Do the regular cues contain material that the extended ones do not, as was the case with the first Hobbit?

Do yourself a favour and buy the Special Edition. There are no alternate cues on the regular edition, save for a 7 second bit in one cue (not interesting). Besides, the album doesn't contain Doug Adams' notes (even though the booklet say it does) and Peter Jackson mentions the interactive extras in his note... but they also appear only on the extended edition. Karol I own the special edition, I was just curious. Thank you!

It's nitpicking, but it's still weird that the SE left out 7 seconds. Not as bad as the Limited Edition for TTT truncating two cues, but still.

Anyone have any suggestions on the "best" cues for a single disc compilation? I'm not familiar enough (yet) with all the music to compile my own "best of" playlist. Putting together my own single-disc albums is one aspect of the hobby I really enjoy. That's why I love all these C&C releases we've been getting. My Desolation of Smaug album was a relatively easy, straightforward affair...unlike my single-disc versions of The Lord of the Rings complete recordings. Still working on and off on Return of the King. Anyway, here's my single-disc of Desolation of Smaug. Bear in mind, everyone has their own preferences and you may well prefer tracks I haven't included, but this album makes an enjoyable listening experience for me. 1. The Quest For Erebor (3:24) 2. Mirkwood (3:06) * 3. Flies And Spiders (9:36) 4. The Woodland Realm (1:08) * 5. Feast Of Starlight (2:48) 6. Barrels Out Of Bond (1:50) 7. The Forest River (5:11) 8. The High Fells (3:39) 9. Durin's Folk (3:04) 10. In The Shadow Of The Mountain (2:16) 11. On The Doorstep (7:46) 12. The Courage Of Hobbits (3:00) 13. Inside Information (3:48) 14. Kingsfoil (2:26) 15. Smaug (6:30) 16. My Armor Is Iron (5:16) 17. Beyond The Forest (5:28) * I edited"Mirkwood" to its final 3:06 and "The Woodland Realm" to its final 1:08 to get right to my favorite parts of those tracks.

All I know is in filling up my birthday list by looking at Amazon Marketplace for the cheapest copy of the Special Edition, I forgot that the US versions had lovely book style packaging instead of nasty little cardboard digi-packs that we UK fans are palmed off with. Hence an inconsistancy in my Hobbit soundtrack collection now.

Special Editions are better because they contain the whole film score as you hear in the movie.
Neither the AUJ SE or DOS SE CDs are complete, not by a long shot.

Does anybody know if the UK 'Deluxe Edition' release of The Desolation of Smaug is in another shoddy/cheap looking cardboard slip case? I'm not sure (yet) whether to order it from Amazon UK, or the US. I know the US release of An Unexpected Journey came in much better quality packaging. Cheers! Yes it does! There's a huge difference of packaging between US and UK pressings of THE HOBBIT. I live in France and ordered in USA my HOBBIT special editions... Hope it helps!
