Zimmer’s main Spider-Man theme is basically Fanfare For The Common Spider-Man, and sounds like a parody (it’s like a cross between the Copland piece and Zimmer’s Going For Gold theme), and the action music just came across as obnoxious noise. I didn't feel the "whisper-rapping" to characterise Electro, worked at all either. The score is the very antithesis of Horner’s finely crafted, dramatically astute, and emotionally rich score for the previous film. He is sorely, sorely missed. I'm sure I'll be branded a Zimmer-hater for that assessment, but I'm really not. From his recent work, I love his Batman and Robert Langdon scores, and I think INCEPTION was genius, but on the other hand I only liked the emotional stuff in MAN OF STEEL and didn't take to the action music at all. In AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 even the emotional material was pretty by-the-numbers, and barely made an impression on me, unlike the other elements I have mentioned which sadly made a negative impression. Perhaps he had too many collaborators on this one. Too many cooks, etc. Nope, your assessment doesn't make you a Zimmer-hater. The Zimmer-hatin' posts are quite obvious. You gave fair and detailed examples of what you feel didn't work. I haven't seen the film, but from the portions of the album I've heard, my opinion of the score would probably align with yours. The vocal parts aren't exactly my thing though. But it looks like Zimmer is enjoying live performing more and more. The soft piano piece near the end, the woodwind theme for Max's character before he becomes Electro, etc. I'm going to relisten to the album to see if I find any of those specific cues.    Posted:   May 4, 2014 - 12:08 PM     By:   Jeff Bond   (Member) There would have to be music missing from the album since this is a 2 1/2 hour movie and from what I could tell apart from a few sequences with songs playing under them, there didn't seem to be one minute that wasn't scored. Zimmer's Spider-Man theme definitely seemed in the ballpark of Horner's approach which was interesting; seemed like they wanted to retain that feel but nothing else as far as Horner's take. I love Andrew Garfield's take on Spider-Man and I agree the first half of the movie is quite rousing if you're a fan of the comic character because they really capture the classic wise-cracking Spidey feel. But the movie is overladen with plot (I swear the dialogue is about 60% exposition, and when people aren't explaining the story to other people then background computer screens and voiceovers are explaining the rest) and for me they really drop the ball (no pun intended) on the finale by focusing so much on Electro--a lot of crucial action at the end feels like an afterthought because the movie is not really about (or at least SHOULDN'T be about) Electro. And the score's focus is squarely on Electro too (I'm sure there's a theme for the Green Goblin but I don't recall it).    Posted:   May 4, 2014 - 1:03 PM     By:   LeHah   (Member) Though a good sight better than the previous installment, Amazing Spiderman 2 is a weird mess of arbitrary events lacking in motivation or characterization. I'd give it a gentle pass if they hadn't name dropped / ruined one of the best supporting characters from the comics (Dr Kafka) and had a final fight that ended with being viscerally insulting and yet acted entirely unimportant. Harry / Goblin had no place or point in the film at all and the kid who played him broadcasted everything with the same self-aware villainy as Jack Nicholson at the beginning of The Shining. I also can't think of another movie that swiped or stole from other films: Branaugh's Frankenstein, Dark Knight Rises, Batman Forever... And apparently no amount of CGI will fix the fact that Andrew Garfield looks like the love child of Shia Labeuof and a box full of angry weasels. In the end, it got a lot of its tone right (the first 15 minutes are aces) but the story made no sense, I didn't care about anyone - and legitimately loathe Peter's parents - and the big moral at the end of the film is "bury your feelings and move on". I just saw the film today and I thought the score was really good in the film. Came home to listen to it on its own and was underwhelmed. In the film it is easy to ignore the generic stuff as it blends into the movie. I did really like the themes for Max and Spiderman. I thought they were both interesting and well-used. It seems Zimmer decided to focus the album on more of the Electro music and less the more gentile themes. They are there in the album just not featured on their own very often. Not enough to get me to keep the album that's for sure. I also must be the only one here who hasn't seen those batman films everyone says these performances are pulled straight out of. I think it flows excellently the way it is now. However, it would have been perfect if Gwendy (or, rather, Peter and Gwendy) had been given a suite on the Deluxe Soundtrack. Anyone any idea of film order for the tracks though? Not intentionally but by circumstance. Anyway - I loved the movie. Obviously not as much of a movie critic as others here but I just really enjoyed it. Loved the performances, I thought the music worked well in the film....and I thought that there was some brilliant imagery - the Spidey suit has never looked so good. One thing I noticed (and this might just be me) is the way the Spiderman theme was introduced in the film....with the opening shot of Spiderman - a fanfare no doubt, heroic - but kind of....timid? The statement of the theme at the end of the film, after we have followed our hero's journey, is much, much broader...a bolder statement of the theme as Spiderman enters a battle battered but stronger.
