"... tolerate a minor 60-second sonic compromise in a irreparably defective cue. OK, it's not perfect, but it's the best that could be done by people who love this music and love what they do. A great big THANK YOU to all at Quartet...
I would also wonder why they could not have used the isolated music score channel on the Laser Disc release for that one minute, or even for the whole cue as alternate "bonus track" just for completeness' sake for the purists. Just wondering.

"The strange case of the Gabrielle cue", just for Holmes investigation. On the Tadlow release the track was disguised in something different, without a real link with the movie. Now that the new discs are all sold-out and delivered in the listeners' hands, anyone who knows the movie can compare and see what the missing original "Gabrielle" turned to be here: again something else, far from the film, with changed mood, this time by a copy-and-paste operation from the old Heifetz performance. Someone minimizes, but the cue was neither so short, nor so irreparably damaged to justify the exclusion. Obviously I'm speaking of the Laser Disc music track. It was over 3 and half minutes of listenable sound, in sub-standard but acceptable quality, affected by some whiffle with minor up-and-down in high frequency, but still comparable with the rest of the disc. Moreover, it would have been perfectly normalized by an expert correction, just as I did for myself. This told, I wonder, like other Rozsa followers, why not be perfect: why Quarted avoided to offer this as a bonus track and give opportunity of completeness to its otherwise wonderful release. In any case, my thanks to Quartet.

The cue was in exceptionally bad condition, well below anything which one would normally hear on a CD, and I am certain that if the cue had been included, instead of the alternative, listeners would have been extremely disappointed and there would likely have been numerous complaints.

Yes, Doug: maybe that my ear, after years of listening to this cue, helped by my personal adjustment, made his own psychological correction and soften the impact of the bad quality, matching it with the rest. I still remain in the hope that a clear copy of the whole score was salvaged and retained in some still unknown place, as the movie and supplementary materials had international diffusion.

Recently got hold of this, and I'm very happy with it. I'm not too outraged at the inclusion of the Heifetz, except that his style is so distinctive that it doesn't sit quite right with the rest of the performance. No big deal there for me though. The sound, as others have stated, is actually a lot better than we were led to believe. The whole package is very nice, although perhaps someone could explain what the following means...
The liner notes for Track 26 ("Farewell/ Auf Wiedersehen") mention "A reel change necessitated an awkward break in the violin line." Right, well you can tell I'm not in the movie business or music production business, because I don't know what that means. Anyone help?
One slight quibble, but unavoidable due to the structure of the film: I did find that things should have been wrapping up about 10 minutes from the end. Just when I was thinking that, in general, all the material had been presented sufficiently, the last few tracks restate the monk music, the monster music, the Gabrielle theme... it began to sound a little like we were on hidden bonus tracks of alternate takes.
But overall, good job Quartet.
