From Film Music Reporter:

Dario Marianelli has signed on to score Laika Entertainment’s upcoming 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid animated feature The Boxtrolls. The movie is directed by Anthony Stacchi (co-director of Open Season) and Graham Annable (story artist on Coraline and ParaNorman) and features the voice talent of Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan. The film is based on the novel Here Be Monsters by Alan Snow and takes place in Cheesebridge, a posh Victorian-era where people believe the Boxtrolls crawl out of the sewers at night and steal their children and cheeses, when in reality they’re a cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs.

Laika President & CEO Travis Knight (ParaNorman) is producing the project with David Ichioka. The project marks the first animated feature for the Academy Award-winning composer whose credits include Joe Wright’s Atonement, Pride and Prejudice and Anna Karenina, as well as V for Vendetta, The Brothers Grimm and Jane Eyre. Laika’s previous two features Coraline and ParaNorman were scored by Bruno Coulais and Jon Brion respectively.

The Boxtrolls is set to be released on September 26, 2014 by Focus Features. For updates on the film, visit the official movie website.

Interesting choice...Laika's stop-motion features tend to think outside the box (*ahem*) when it comes to choosing composers, whereas DreamWorks and the other CGI animation houses all tend to use the same half-dozen Remote Control clones (and John Powell). Looking forward to seeing and hearing this. smile

Looking forward to the score for sure, but my goodness does the movie look annoying. I'm not sure I can sit through 90 minutes of box-beating.

Well, not anymore... at least some of the last major ones were done by Desplat, Silvestri, Elfman and Doyle is doing the next. Sure there are some others as well, which Powell, Jackman or Balfe are still attached to, but at least it's a start and we are finally getting some interesting animation scores after so many years.

Since when were Alexandre Desplat, Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman and Patrick Doyle Remote Control clones?

He was giving them as examples of not Remote Control.

True, true...animation scores have thankfully become more diverse in the last couple of years.

Like so many of today's corporate productions, this one could end up being a bad mashup.

But Dario Marianelli? Who along with Desplat probably comprises the entirety of today's elite orchestral movie composition?

This just might work. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I hope this doesn't turn into a Bruno Coulais style wacky score but that is what I expect from the trailers.

The US cd is a digipack. At least it's not shittypack like How to Train your Dragon 2, but it's more like MSM's earlier digipacks.
If anyone can confirm the CD was actually released in jewell case anywhere in the world, please, let me know...

Going to have to get this. Every cue I previewed in iTunes sucked me in and I was genuinely surprised when the 60 seconds had passed cutting off the music.
