The Oscars get more boring every year, it is a persistent decline. That is because the awards, with minor exceptions, have little to do with what the movie goer wants to see, or likes, or thinks is 'the best' of most of the categories. The best movie, best director categories in particular do not represent anything close to reality as far as what the movie goer would appreciate. It is pretty much an academic exercise now, it has little if any bearing on the movie goers, or even the careers of those that win. I can foresee a time when it is not even on broadcast TV anymore, because the audience will dwindle.

The only obvious contender I'm interested in is the Coens' "Inside Llewyn Davis." It would be cool if "Frances Ha" gets a lot of attentioin, but probably at best an Original Screenplay and possibly Actress nod. I doubt that "Upstream Color" will be noted at all by the Academy. I haven't seen "Nebraska" yet, but I tend to like Payne films. Bruce Dern is being touted as the one to beat for Best Supporting Actor in that.
Otherwise it indeed looks like a very dull year. But I also didn't like last year's Oscars which failed to nominate the two best films of the year, "The Master" and "Moonrise Kingdom" in the Best Picture category. But no surprise really - the Oscars are pretty predictible in honoring mediocrities and ignoring the really great films every year.
