I found the documentary fantastic, if 20 years late. Chattaway sits there silent for a while as McCarthy and Jones spin tales from the first few seasons of the show. Many of those tales have already been recounted in the extended liner notes for the FSM set and the LaLaLand Next Generation 3CD set, but it's so nice to see them in the flesh. What I think the documentary just ends up reinforcing is that Jones' music completely outclassed the "Mahler adagio" stuff that the producers preferred. The FSM box set has revealed Jones as this completely essential, brilliant composer who wrote dozens of brilliant, cinematic miniscores. I've been listening to them for a few years now and I always find myself going back to them. I mean, "Who Watches the Watchers" is arguably more interesting than the entirety of Chattaway's and McCarthy's Star Trek output. And I know, I know, it's not their fault. I think Chattaway and McCarthy are both excellent composers. The other point all three of them make that is interesting is that the Berman approach turns out to have anticipated the current trend away from themes and individual instruments. And after hating the Berman approach for so many years, I do see nuggets of wisdom in it considering how poorly "Code of Honor" has aged. But yeah, the documentary is highly recommended.
