Now with the new DVD out at SAE I dare ask if there's a chance for that glorious and indeed "heavenly" score by Franz Waxman. A neglected gem (the suite on the Varese CD is better than nothing but omits the best parts). This one deserves the full set of acetates or whatever elements there are.

I, too, have always enjoyed this exuberant score. Waxman really hopped over the fence to the fun side for this one. It's sort of like sophisticated cartoon music (and I mean that only in a most complimentary way). It fits the film's style like a glove.

I love everything about this film.
I would love to have the score.

This is the film that Jack Benny used to joke about all the time on his radio and television show. I'm surprised that he didn't go to the editing room, saw some of his scenes of the film, and told the editor, "Now cut that out!"

I'm sure if a wealthy film music fan had $200k to drop on it, the Tribute team would happily be on a plane to Moscow to lay down the tracks.

For a great alternate "Horn", check out the Ford Theater radio version with Benny and Claude Rains. The script is very different, much more clever, with one of the biggest laugh lines happening in the opening scene of the play.

The HORN got awful reviews when it was released and did poor business. Warners got scared and produced a truly terrible trailer which could only have turned off audiences. I think THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT is a wonderful farce and the rooftop finale is hilarious (and marvelously scored by Carl Stalling).

I have a 1945 radio performance of Waxman's HORN fantasy. I think it was played on the Standard Hour. The Queensland recorded it several years ago.

Legends of Hollywood, vol. 1 - Queensland Symphony Orchestra 1990 - More then a few years ago.

The story is that Bernard Herrmann suggested to Franz that he make a concert piece from it.

I just watched this movie. It’s quirky, oddball fun. Definitely not the clunker Jack Benny (or his writers) always made it out to be.
And what a score!! Waxman is in rare, zany form. I really loved it - so, just to bump this question again, is there any chance of the original recording getting released??

I'm just a wee bit late to see this thread. Ray, if you're still looking in, can you please tell us where/how to access the Ford Theater radio show? By any chance, is it online somewhere? Or on a recording perhaps?

Fascinating to hear Stokowskis classicistic approach! Obviously the overture was partially reworked later on - just compare this to the Richard Mills version on the "Legends of Hollywood Vol.1" album...
