  • LA FIN DU JOUR
  • THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
  • LE JOUR SE LEVE
  • MIDNIGHT
  • NINOTCHKA
  • OF MICE AND MEN
  • THE ROARING TWENTIES
  • THE RULES OF THE GAME
  • STAGECOACH
  • THE WIZARD OF OZ

Edit: I'm switching THE ROARING TWENTIES for ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS. Not that there's anything wrong with with ANGELS but Cagney, Bogart, Walsh and gangsters... can't top that!

My 5 favourite films of 1939, not including the obvious out-of-competition status for
Hawks' ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS, are :

    DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK
    LA FIN DU JOUR
    PIEGES
    THE SPY IN BLACK
    YOUNG MR. LINCOLN

One of the two or three films starring Maurice Chevalier I actually can stand ! And it's a fantastic one, kind of murder mystery movie directed by Siodmak.

And even though it's two times too many, Chevalier sings only two times in it !

I winnowed it down to ten per the OP's thread title (and it wasn't easy), but here's the whole megillah.

    1939

  • THE CAT & THE CANARY
  • DESTRY RIDES AGAIN
  • EACH DAWN I DIE
  • LA FIN DU JOUR
  • GOLDEN BOY
  • THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
  • LE JOUR SE LEVE
  • THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK
  • OF MICE AND MEN
  • MIDNIGHT
  • NINOTCHKA
  • ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS
  • THE ROARING TWENTIES
  • THE RULES OF THE GAME
  • THE SPY IN BLACK
  • STAGECOACH
  • YOU CAN'T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN
  • YOUNG MR. LINCOLN
  • THE WIZARD OF OZ
  • THE WOMEN

    Need to see:
    Bel Ami
    La charrette fantôme
    Le dernier tournant
    Fric-Frac
On the Night of the Fire
    Pièges
    Sans lendemain

Hardly a ringing endorsement and yet it ends up in your top five! Erich von Stroheim, Marie Dea, Pierre Renoir, and Maurice Chevalier(!) - this is a film I would very much like to see.

So you can imagine how great it must be ! smile

Gaumont has released it in France on its "On Demand Collection" with some french subtitles for the hearing impair.

But let's hope for a proper Criterion treatment. wink
