Well at least the 45 second opening theme.

Theres a 45 sec audio clip of the theme.

Its sounds kinda cheap considering the big budget for the show, yet its creative and has some appeal.

J.J frequently composes his own main titles - Alias, Lost and Fringe for example.

Exactly.

However, I'd be curious to hear a longer piece by him at some point (that was perhaps less 'sound designy').

I've heard worse (like the opening to Lost). Has something of a Nowhere Man feel to it in the beginning. (That's Mark Snow, not the Beatles.)

J.J. tried to break into scoring before he was famous for other reasons. Apparently he wasn't sought after. You can see him co-credited as a main composer on "Night Beast", as "Jeffrey Abrams". Robert Walsh is the other main composer.

(additional music credited to Arlon Ober, Leonard Rogowski)

Also composed Person of Interest's title.

Composing a main title for a long-running show is extremely lucrative.

Unfortunately, as I've said before, he's no Glen A. Larson in that department.

I kinda like it, in a time when main titles are largely missing I'm not going to complain. (Though I can hear both Fringe and Person Of Interest in it)

He did compose the two source cues in Star Trek. Although what's left of them in the movies isn't much longer than a series main title.

Director composers rarely impress.
I have not found an instance that I really enjoyed the score.

Yes, I know some people like John Carpenter.
