I recently saw the drama A HERO AIN’T NOTHIN’ BUT A SANDWICH. This 1977 film came at the tail end of the 1970s black films, and was a serious attempt to translate its namesake Alice Childress novel to the screen. It was only mildly successful, despite the efforts of its two stars, Cicely Tyson and Paul Winfield, appearing in their second feature together, after 1972’s SOUNDER. The novel was aimed at young adults, and the film came off as an upscale afterschool special.
The film’s sometimes funky score was by Tom McIntosh, who had scored the 1973 James Caan film SLITHER. Reportedly, Bruce Broughton provided some uncredited incidental music. The score was released on a quickly deleted Columbia Records LP, which has never made it to CD. Here is the track “School’s Out (Benji’s Theme), with Grammy-nominee Hubert Laws on flute.
I contacted one of the people involved in the score recently, to clear up Broughton's invovement, 'cause he's not credited in the opening or end credits of the film. Plus some sources show Leonard Rosenman as well.
I was not able to get clarification, though the person had worked with Rosenman before.
