I wonder if a pricey set might be ALL 3 Matrix scores?

The first Matrix score is Varese, so forget that big grin

I wonder about this though.

Intrada did a Star Trek 5 complete after LLL sold out, and they have a Masters of the Universe too. Are more than one company not allowed to release the same at the same time?

Varese bought what is called "perpetuity rights" to The Matrix as well as many other scores, which means they now own the EXCLUSIVE rights to release any version of it. Theoretically they could sell or license the rights to another company, but it's never happened before that I know of. I maintain a list of all the scores Varese has perpetuity rights to right here:

http://filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=86092&forumID=1&archive=0

The other labels don't have perpetuity rights to any scores that I know of, other than something like the 1989 re-recording of Rio Conchos Intrada funded, which they would have all the rights to.

I have no idea if any of our specialty labels (besides Varèse) have perpetuity rights to any scores, though I'd be surprised if there are none. Certainly, the major labels do, however. (Some have been willing to license these scores to the specialty labels in the last few years, without ceding these rights.)

It's not surprising that Varèse has these rights (which Roger Feigelson of Intrada has said they would have gotten, too, had they had the means). In the '80s and '90s, Varèse had the specialty market to contemporary score soundtracks pretty much to themselves (after the majors cherry-picked the big titles). If a studio wanted to get a few bucks by selling the soundtrack rights, Varèse was the only game in town (by and large). So Varèse negotiated for rights in perpetuity. Why wouldn't they?

Yea I'm sure some of the other labels have perpetuity rights to some scores, I just haven't heard of any myself.

Of course Varese was smart to buy those rights in the 80s and 90s when they were given the option, no one's questioning that. What is annoying people is that they have all but stopped their club line which at one point WAS finally expanding some of those 80s and 90s gems, and they aren't licensing out the rights for another label to expand them while they are too busy to get to them themselves. Which basically means there's a vocal group of impatient people more than anything else. But what else is there to talk about? smile

Intrada *does* have perpetuity rights to some scores (besides their re-recordings, obviously). One example off the top of my head is Tombstone, though I'm sure there are others...

And I think Silva might have perpetuity rights on a number of albums, which might be why we haven't seen a complete Intrada Rambo: First Blood Part II yet (though I'm hopeful it's negotiable because it'd be great to have definitive versions of the complete trilogy on the Intrada label).

Some of these may be released, others may not, and others not listed here may appear. Keep watching the skies! smile

Is this a hint that the Superman: The Animated Series soundtrack will be released on the same day as The X-Files?!
