Watched the final season 1 episode. The music just got better and better and ended perfectly.
This disc is music from just the first half of the season right?

Hopefully the show hits Netflix in the US sometime before Season 2 so it can get the audience it deserves.
CBS is basically holding it hostage in the States, unless you pay your monthly All Access ransom demand of course.

In fairness to CBS, they do own it and can do what they like with it.

Indeed. The show exists because of CBS All-Access, not independently of it. (Netflix kicked in additional money for the international rights. Are they holding it hostage from European viewers who don't have Netflix?) Saying CBS is holding their product hostage is like saying McDonald's is holding McNuggets hostage from people who'd rather spend their money at Burger King.

As for the music, I think it's definitely gotten more interesting as the show has gone on, with the action motif typically used as the ship goes to… um… spore being my favorite. Some of the music for Mudd also perked up my ears.

As far as I understand it, Netflix money paid for the entirety of the series. CBS has Star Trek rights in the States and that's the only reason Americans are the only country getting it on CBS Streaming and not Netflix like in the rest of the world.

Close.

CBS has "Star Trek" TV series rights worldwide. They commissioned "Star Trek: Discovery" as one of just a few shows to launch their new streaming service in the US (a service they're looking to build into a Netflix/Hulu/Amazon competitor). In looking for an international distributor (since CBS All-Access does not currently exist in other countries), they were able to sell international rights to Netflix for a figure CBS CEO Les Moonves bragged to investors would cover the entire budget. Is this accurate? Hard to say. Moonves is known to speak out of both sides of his mouth, boasting of record profits to shareholders while crying poor to the creative guilds that make the shows. But whether it ultimately or ever covered the entire budget, Netflix's investment is undoubtedly very substantial.

But having international distributors cover most or all of the costs of an American series is not unique to "Discovery." I know of one specific NBC series of last year with strong enough international sales that the series was in profit before any of it was shot. (There are many, this is just one I was privy to.) This does not make the series any less an NBC property.

Schiffy has it right. I have heard that the Netflix contribution to DISCOVERY ultimately covered about 2/3 of the budget and gives them international distribution rights long-term. I think their investment was made with the commitment that there would be at least 2 seasons, which the show will obviously have at this point. The international version of the show streams with 5.1 audio, and includes HDR color for fancy-ass TVs that can utilize that, but the two are otherwise identical, except for the Netflix logos. The CBS All Access version is in stereo, without HDR. Nevertheless, the show is wholly owned by CBS, and if there's ever a Blu Ray release or anything, CBS will be the company putting it out.

Netflix is smart to be doing what they're doing... basically fronting the cost of producing shows in exchange for international distribution rights. Many shows that you may not even be aware of have made similar deals with Netflix, including many on AMC like BETTER CALL SAUL, which has nearly its entire production budget covered by Netflix. It allows Netflix to build up a large library of shows that people actually want to see abroad, rather than taking a risk on developing and producing shows themselves. I know that DISCOVERY has been a huge hit for Netflix internationally, and shows like SAUL do very well for them too.

Yes, that's correct. There is supposed to be another release (digital only, I think) for the 2nd half of the season.

Where unlike CBS' All Access, you can watch it in 4K and subtitle it in the original Klingon.

On Twitter yesterday composer Jeff Ruso said that "chapter 2 music [of Discovery] coming soon...and limited edition deluxe 4 side vinyl coming soon too. #StarTrekDiscovery"

and also:

"Chapter 2 will be from episodes 10-15 not previously released. Vinyl will be side a/b chapter 1 selects, side c/d chapter 2 selects"

First time they mention a CD release for chapter 2, excellent!

Slightly disappointed that they re-use the same artwork from Chapter 1 again...

I'll all over the volume 2 CD - that new huge recording of the original theme as the final track is stunning. The rest is icing on the cake.

No one has been talking about Discovery here, but this season is wonderful and I especially like the music in tonight's episode.

I think the score has generally been stronger this season, even if you can barely tell due to its horrible mix.
