And speaking of Paul Gulacy (who also happens to be a funny guy, ask to hear his Charles Bronson impressions), if you've never read Six From Sirius (color, Epic Comics miniseries) and "Blood on Black Satin" (b&w, it ran in Eerie), you've never seen what he can really do. He also drew a Batman two-parter back in the 80s that looked nothing short of amazing.

Geez. I've gotta get over to this side of the board more often.

I picked up the final Fu Manchu arc of this from Ebay a little while ago, because I stumbled on this site and was wowed by the art:

http://www.supermegamonkey.net/chronocomic/entries/master_of_kung_fu_116-118.shtml

Never had read any before, gotta go dig em out tonight.

Plus I've got Six from Sirius (though haven't read it in ages, don't remember it) - so another I need to remind myself of.

Thanks, guys, for keeping the flame alive!

Welcome to the thread, Sean. It was started five years ago and occasionally gets bumped whenever I go into my "Jim Phelps' MoKF Complete Comic Breakdown" mode. wink

Thank god you do, or I'd never have seen this!

EDIT - plus I see this is post 123 - I love that kind of numeric irrelevancy.

"Artwise, I felt Zeck's run on Captain America beat the pants off Byrne's. And Beatty was a big part of the magic. A great inker/finisher can make or break the pencils, like Terry Austin (Byrne), Joe Sinnott (Kirby), Romeo Tanghal (Perez), and so on.

Agreed on John Beatty; who was very nice to this fan. smile In fact, Beatty, Zeck, and Jim Shooter were all at the Con for the Secret Wars 30th anniversary thing. I'm surprised that it is as highly regarded as it is(?).

Interesting. I thought Shooter was persona non grata when it came to celebrating Marvel-ous things, but I guess enough time has passed.

Finally, Master Of Kung Fu is being collected and reprinted by Marvel.

In June, they'll publish the Master Of Kung Fu Omnibus, almost 700 pages , $125.00 retail. A bit cheaper on Amazon's pre-order page, but either way it's way out of my price range.

A few Essential or Epic trade paperbacks would have been fine. Ah, well.

Included are : SPECIAL MARVEL EDITION #15-16, MASTER OF KUNG FU (1974) #17-37, GIANT-SIZE MASTER OF KUNG FU #1-4, GIANT-SIZE SPIDER-MAN #2, and Material from IRON MAN ANNUAL #4

I'm not a fan of the omnibus format. I have most of the series (except for "Deadly Hands of Kung Fu") but would have sprung for this had it been in Marvel's "Epic Collection" publications, which are magnificent, True Believers! wink

Me too on the hoping for an Epic Collection collection rather than an omnibus. Though I did get the Simonson Fourth World omnibus with a Christmas gift card. But then, anything Kirby related kind of calls out for a giant honking book, however unwieldy.

Since some former omnibuses are coming out in Epic Collections (Thor To Wake the Magog and Silver Surfer When Calls Galactus are two I picked up), I hold out hope that one day this, too, may reappear in that form.

Though, frankly, I may not wait for it. I'd rather have the omnibus than tracking down all those icky dirty old newsprint comics (like vinyl, I don't miss the old format at all, and have to buck myself up to read old issues).

I have enough Modern Art and film books that weigh a ton so I have to draw the line somewhere. I am thrilled that MoKF has finally gotten past that dreaded republishing rights with the Fu Manchu family. I hope that Marvel's republishing rights are not limited to just the omnibi.

I understand the hesitance at going back into the old comics because of the poor newsprint but after reading a few you'll actually be used to it and find the new, brightly-colored versions tough to get used to! (Okay, maybe not).

Amen on the big books. My wife is an artist and we have such a collection of monsters that she wants to start weeding them out.

The worst thing about old comics is that it's getting harder and harder for me to read the newsprint captions - that alone makes upgrades (and sometimes digital comics, though I don't love them as much as other digital media) so helpful for me.

Time to break out those reading spectacles, Mr. Sean! wink It may make you appear aged but at least you'll have numerous chances to utter an Admiral Kirk-style "Damn!" each time you're forced to rely on them.

Dude, I've got trifocals that I wear just when I'm, err, awake. But enough about me. wink

I am not a fan of the omnibus format either. Most of my reading is while I commute to and from work, and lugging around a heavy book like the average omnibus can be a real pain. I agree with you regarding the Epic Collection. They are very reasonably priced for the amount of issues being reprinted, and they hold up well. I haven't quite decided how I feel about the fact that the volumes aren't necessarily reprinted in order. For example, for a long time there has been a big gap in the reprints of Roger Stern's Avengers run, which will be remedied in a few months when the Under Siege volume is released. I believe there are still some issues from Stern's run that need to be reprinted, but at least those are the bookends of his run. That said, I can see the appeal of this strategy when there are specific storylines they want to make available for a reasonable price.

Ask and ye shall receive (albeit in omnibus format and I may have to actually splurge for this one):

September 23, 2017 will mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of the death of MoKF artist extraordinaire Gene Day.

Just found another retrospective by someone who knew him:

"Jim Shooter Did Not Kill Gene Day"
