Exactly. Free will exists only when you run your own business. If you are an employee (and which to remain such), you deliver what is asked of you. McCarthy, a fine composer, got himself an 18 year gig, and he was still able to push out loud, hard driving music after Generations. Considering the first two or three seasons of TNG had louder, more thematic music, the "droning" era lasted a mere 5 out of 18 years. The scores for DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise were bolder. And there were still some gems scattered in the post-Roddenberry producing years of TNG. "Art" is wonderful, but it seldom pays the rent.
