I purchased the Blue Box at full price when it came out. But most of the music isn't something I find myself going back to. I play the first score on a semi regular basis, Sup 2 on rare occasions when I'm in a mood to hear more music from the series. The rest I've spun once and never gone back to again.

TBH, I would even go so far as to admit that when I had the Rhino 2-disc set, I listened to disc 1 far more than I listened to the second disc. I much preferred the Krypton/Smallville/Fortress of Solitude material over the "flying around saving California" stuff.

I appreciate those who have been cheerleaders for II-IV as well as the 1988 animated series, but I really just want an updated stand-alone release of the 1978 film score.

Oh, and I am another who loves Zimmer's score for MAN OF STEEL. It's among my favorites of all time.

I LOVE the Donner Superman II (both versions), III was good, haven't seen IV.

And hey, finally someone else loves Man of Steel! That score was so thrilling to me, and how it worked with "Flight" on the film; "Terraforming"...love that one.

I love both the Williams and the Zimmer.

2018 marks Superman's 80th anniversary; they damn well better release this score.

Well of course. It will be a third pressing of the box set with an anniversary sticker on it. wink
(I just remembered the box set which was a "limited" edition sold out, then suddenly there was a "second edition" pressing.)

Ordered! (just hope the CD's quality control is better than the 2000 edition)

The second edition reminds me of when FSM found a box of Towering Inferno CDs underneath the Kaplans' desk after said release was listed as being "sold out."

Any 'Live-to-Projection' concerts of this movie in the works? It has the potential to be a family-friendly movie, if the organizers can get pass the "Move your ass!" line from the film.

Great idea!

Maybe I should have waited until this December15 to begin inquiring about this, as that was the date of the film’s release 40 years ago. I would think the film would be celebrated within the 365 days after the said date.

For example, the announcement that the Live-to-Projection concert of CE3K came last November 30th as the picture was released on November 16, 1977, just 40 years and a few days ago.

Perhaps someone, in the know, can share any news on a Superman concert, now?

As an owner of the Blue Box, I would happily give permission for any re-release of the score to be immediatly cancelled, if it meant I couold see the moive on the big screen....just once....

If the original Superman would be reissued again.... then I would by it just because it is my favorite score and I would take any improvement with sound - as it is not the greatest recording to start with (just compare to "The Fury" re-recording done at the same time)...

One point I always wondered about:

The fanfare at the end of "Fortress of Solitude" : I never fell the power of it outside the one from the original release (Japanese CD edition for example). The trumpets have a sound and a power that seems completely different, and I find it completely exhilarating in the original edition and not in the later Rhino/BB... Am I the only one here?

Is it because it is a different take? Because of the reverb?
I would be interested to know... any idea, Mike? ;-)

How about a 3CD including original album remastered?

My first LP soundtrack. I'd love to have it on CD.

Last Sunday night the extended 3 hour TV version was shown on the big screen at the Hayden Orpheum cinema in Sydney.

Dafuq is wrong with me, too. Love "Superman," very little interest in II-IV, try though I have. I don't even care for Williams' new themes for IV.

I've bought ever version of Superman that's come out. If there was a cd that improved on the Blue Box sound then sign me up. I'm weak I guess. I just love that one!

I also really appreciate the Ken Thorne scores. The arrangements for the action perfectly. I'd honestly love someone to take a large orchestra and re-record some of the better tracks. The "Metropolis Battle" is awesome! I also love how he rearranged the main Superman theme for oil tanker scene in III. The Blue Box CDs are great though!

Yeah...don't care about Supes II-IV or that some young whippersnapping GenY FSMer was too young to see the film in the cinema, but a 40th anniversary Superman '78 score release would be the right thing to do...

...with all due respect to the great Richard Pryor, Robert Vaughn, and of course...Nuclear Man.

A new SUPERMAN edition would most likely look like the Rhino set, but in Blue Box sound quality. It's possible they would go to a 3-disc set, like STAR TREK: TMP, and include the Extra disc tracks on a short, third CD. I'd love to know if they could find additional tracks weren't in the Blue Box.

A 2-disc SUPERMAN II would have room for all the Extra tracks, plus the 38:08 LP program, which differs from the film version.

Williams must have inspired Zimmer in that he "farmed out" his themes for other, lesser composers to use in his absence.

As far as SUPERMAN scores go, SUPERMAN is the classic, John Williams' score is a masterpiece. I also like 3, which is more original than 2 (which is basically just what Elmer Bernstein did for his own score for THE RETURN OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.

Interestingly, if I were to ship the Blue Box from Screen Archives to the EU right now, it says it costs 72,50$ for trackable shipping! Holy cow! Anyone said shipping costs don't matter? :-o

So I can understand those who would like a stand alone release. Though I think the Blue Box, while expensive, is probably the final word as far as I'm concerned for these classic scores.

The 1978 Superman is a classic score that should have its own separate release. The theme is known even by mainstream types.
