Yes, they had to edit it down with 8 minutes. Only at the first viewing were they allowed to air the whole episode which is longer than the regular episodes. Whedon said it was one of the hardest things he ever had to do! lol!

They edited out the Overture, lots of dialogue, "If We're Together", "Dawn's Ballet", a part of "Rest In Peace", a few seconds of "Where Do We Go From Here?", part of "Walk Through The Fire" (Buffy's "so one by one, they turn from me...."part) + lots of other small parts. frown

Kind of off topic but may be of interest to some here:

Mondo is doing a "Once More, With Feeling" vinyl, hopefully some time this year. I got the test pressing during their last TP sale! One of my new prized records!

That's awesome! Was it the same tracklist as the CD?
Would be awesome if Anya's "Mrs." was included as a bonus since it's OMWF related.

Guess, it dont have the score cues from The Gift, Restless and Hush?
Or the dreadful "Something To Sing About" demo by Joss's ex-wife! lol!

And I suppose this is why LLL weren't allowed to include any musical related in their box set.

Same tracklist as cd, and nope, the score tracks aren't on it but surprisingly the awful demo is! I was shocked. And I'm assuming it's an approved test so it'll most certainly be on the retail release as well. Maybe some legality forced them to include it? I lift the needle before it starts playing. I can't bring myself to listen to it again! haha.

I don't like the demo either, but I am grateful for Joss's ex-wife having helped out with the musical. They actually had an entire demo CD in which she was singing the female parts with Joss and I think that CD also helped convince SMG to take part in the singing (she initially didn't want to).

I am not particularly interested in VINYL, but any new Buffy releases excite me. Hopefully there are some fans with a record player who will enjoy this.

They haven't released any information about it yet, but most likely it will be new custom art. Really hoping for mustard yellow vinyl!

Mustard theme would be great!

I love how they gave us the prequel to the mustard incident in Selfless before Anya's "Mrs." big grin

A little off-topic (not score related)...

But I'm sure you've heard the news about a Buffy REBOOT with Joss Whedon involved?
I was furious, lol, "HOW CAN THEY MAKE A NEW BUFFY???? AND WITH JOSS ON BOARD?? WTF???"

But yay! It's been confirmed it's NOT a reboot! But actually a new Slayer!!!
This means a spin-off! So maybe, since Joss is involved with this as well, we might get to see cameos from the old Scoobies? Would be amazing!!

I wonder who will score it...!

A "richly diverse" black Slayer from England, I read quickly online.

Huh.

Black, CHECK.
Diverse, CHECK.
From overseas, CHECK.

It's been done already. Her name was Kendra, Joss.

If she's from England, then maybe Giles could be her Watcher, if it's a story set in this time.
THAT would be awesome! big grin

Would be so cool!!

Maybe this is why they are wrapping up the comic book series this year?
Maybe it ends with a new Slayer being activated?

Well, without going in-depth on reading on the official season comics, as I understand it, Giles:

Was killed off by Angel (under the influence of an evil), brought back to life some how, comes back a kid, is growing up slowly and is a teenager right now.

So if that's the Giles you want...

Plus, pervert Whedon is only involved to a degree and is handing the baton off to somebody else. Don't expect what you got with BtVS and "angel".

I think I read that the comics are moving from Dark Horse to another publisher called Boom, just like the Firefly comics. So I think they decided to wrap up the comics, because they knew they were not going to renew the license

And for the sake of the world, I hope they will ignore the comics if it is indeed a spin-off of some kind. I'd rather like them to start fresh than to try to cater to the comic audience.

Btw. I am not actually sure if it's really a spin-off and not a reboot, I think you can interpret her statement on Twitter in many different ways, additionally, the project is still in very early development.

In terms of scoring, I already suggested that Christophe Beck should score Joss's new HBO series The Nevers, because I feel like he would score a premium channel TV series where they have everything in the can before airing, because it makes the process of scoring it easier and maybe not as difficult time-wise as with a broadcast network show.

Soo....if this new Buffy series is also a short-run-series on a streaming channel with a shorter episode order, maybe they could hire Christophe Beck again?

But if he wants to stick with movies, just bring back Robert Duncan, who has been scoring TV for a while now. Though I am also interested how Ramin Djawadi would score the show.

Just please no Bear McCreary or Blake Neely. I'm sick of their style.

I love Bear McCreary's style...though I confess I never got into his TV superhero scoring (or the Agents of SHIELD show). But Joss reteaming with Beck or Duncan would be fantastic IMO.

And obviously, I would hope the comics get completely ignored, Justin. They sound a lot worse than the Star Wars "Legends" line as it's now called. If those can be set aside then the dumb Buffy comics can be too.

I loved his score for Battlestar Galactica, which was fantastic, but his score for both Shield and Walking Dead is kind of....generic. Didn't blow me away. I think maybe I am hard on him, when he was on BSG he didn't have nearly as many projects as he has now.

Honestly, I also think a TV show should not be dictated by comics, canon or not. Not everybody reads them and you would also really need to have like one person on set who would have to make sure that the series is in line with the comics, which I think is just too much of an effort.

I really disliked his score for Battlestar at first...it felt so inappropriate in the series, to my ears. I loved the series so stuck with it despite not caring for most of the music (the drums for the dogfights were exciting enough but I would have preferred something thematic). As the series went on into its last two seasons, I started having a few problems with the show, though I still liked it. (I am one of the ones who really hated the finale.) But the score on the other hand took a good step forward near the end of the second season and into the third...and then season four was even better scoring, and then by the last half of season four I feel like Bear was at the top of his game, becoming the composer whose work I know and love.

As I understand it, he scores key episodes and sequences of SHIELD and Walking Dead (and probably scored a greater percentage of early seasons), but has additional composers help with some frequency. The more generic cues may very likely be by them instead of him.

On the other hand, I think Human Target was all, or mostly, him...and that was awesome:

I also think the same is true of The Cape and DaVinci's Demons, also extremely strong thematic work:

But my favorite Bear McCreary TV work is Outlander. You have to like bagpipes, obviously...

His work for this series is the kind of soaring thematic orchestral scoring I adore, and some of his cues in particular have been just incredible, like the mid-first season finale, which was a cue over 10 minutes long and expertly interweaves multiple themes he had established up until that point:

I also enjoyed his work on Black Sails which was very consistent and appropriate for that show, albeit more textural and subtle in its thematic usage. But it had a great evolution/development of his Battlestar dogfight sound for the sea battles.
