Two weeks ago today we broke the news that on November 11th, A&E with distributor Lionsgate Entertainment will release The Avengers - Season 5 on high-def Blu-ray Disc. At the time we reported that it was a 3-disc set, with 24 episodes, presented "in widescreen video, with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio." Fans went bonkers about that "widescreen" bit, of course, because the show was originally broadcast in "square" full frame video aspect ratio. So we've followed up with the studio about this, and confirmed that this was a typo in the info they originally sent to retailers the other week. The Avengers - Season 5 info presented above is all correct, except it will be FULL SCREEN video, not widescreen, after all. It's officially described by them as "1080P High Definition 4x3 Full Screen (1.33:1)." Cost is $29.99 SRP, and Lionsgate has sent over the following statement describing the release: John Steed (MacNee) works for British Intelligence, and the cases he finds are always a bit odd, just on the edge of science fiction. Steed is the ultimate in culture and grace as he saves the world each week, along with his female partner Emma Peel (Rigg). Faced with solving problems such as cyborg killers, a city built under a disused coal mine, a gang put together for adrenalin junkies and a killer who uses a concentrated cold virus to kill his victims by having them sneeze to death, there is never a dull moment at work for this delightful duo.
Keep up with the witty and stylish crime fighting duo as they embark on new adventures when The Avengers: Season 5 arrives for the first time ever on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) November 11 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. This classic series follows the escapades of the eccentrically suave John Steed and the strong and sexy Emma Peel, two secret agents whose mission is to face the most mysterious and dangerous situations - although slightly peculiar. Starring Patrick MacNee (TV's "Night Man," Thunder in Paradise) and Diana Rigg (HBO's "Game of Thrones," The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries), the three-disc set features all 24 episodes of Season 5, the first season in color, with never-before-seen artwork. The Avengers: Season 5 will be available for the affordable suggested retail price of $29.99.
Studio Canal in the UK plans to release The Avengers series on BD in 2014. Series 4 is scheduled for November 2014, also released in France in November.
Amazon UK doesn't offer the pre-order for The Avengers Series 4 (BD) yet. It's always slow and they tend to offer it just one month before the release date. Therefore by mid-October, Amazon UK will start their offer.
The Murder Market is an excellent episode and it's hard to believe that it's Diana's first go 'round, as she seems right in character with the exception of her slamming her hand down on Steed's toy soldier table.
As for the villains, Patrick Cargill was brilliant!
Have you seen The Prisoner episode - 'Hammer Into Anvil.'? Cargill is excellent in that episode.
When Honor Blackman took Cathy Gale's leather on permanent leave after Season 3 (to reappear opposite Der Great Scot in another iconic "Goldfinger" role), they decided to bring in another partner for Pat Macnee.
Alas, after fully completing her first ep, "Town of No Return"
and half of a second, "The Murder Market", the producers were less than elated at the rushes.
All agreed Ms. Shepherd
was an effective enough actress but just
"not an Avengers girl", as Brian Clemens put it. This anniversary compendium tells the whole story plus as encyclopedic an enterprise on the origins of the series anyone could wish.
However, they transformed that frustrating initial obstacle into a triumphant opportunity when the royal replacement came to test and - well, da rest iz herstory ...
