Why wasn't Uhura in "The Doomsday Machine"? That always bugged me.
According to Elizabeth Rogers, who played Lt. Palmer, Nichelle Nichols missed the episode due to a singing engagement. To quote Ms. Rogers, "I was used as an instant 'threat' replacement." [These Are The Voyages TOS Season Two page 149 - Marc Cushman with Susan Osborn]
Nichols didn't need to be replaced again until the third season.

Bloody hell, Hippy Charles Napier in kinky boots serenading people with a hippy song straight out of The Producers. Terrible terrible episode.

Well, i finished season 3 without realising it. It just ends. After so many bad episodes in a row i rather wish they'd stopped at season 2. Now when people things about the new Trek products like "it doesn't feel like real old Trek", i'll just think of the hippy kinky-boots singing Napier episode and thank God.
Still not a Trek fan, but certainly enjoyed a lot of those first two series. Gave me a newfound appreciation of Nimoy, Shatner and Kelley. Shame Kelley never made it onto a Columbo episode. Shatner and Nimoy were ace in theirs.

I went through a period of Star Trek ennui. I'd seen Season 1 many times and thought that it was great, with the odd exception. I always thought that Season 2 had a kind of (unwarranted) bad reputation, but I liked quite a few of the episodes. Then I saw "I, Mudd" (which most people seem to enjoy, but which I find highly irritating), "Journey to Babel" and "Friday's Child" - all of which were annoying - so I put it on hold and started watching Season 4 of "The Twilight Zone" (the 50-min episodes... Ha! Bad reputation, but I'm finding a high percentage of them excellent).
So there I was the other morning ready to watch the next episode of "Twilight Zone", but being half-blind I'd inadvertantly pulled out the Star Trek box. Season 2, so I thought, "Bah, I'll just carry on from where I left off". And I did. "The Deadly Years" followed by "Obsession". Both terrific, character-based episodes. It made me realise how important good scripting, good acting (yes, I think that Shatner could be wonderful) and good character-chemistry are. All held tightly together by solidly-controlled direction.
I'm back to being a Star Trek (TOS) fan. We'll see what kind of gibbering wreck I am by the end of Season 3, but Season 2 is holding up really well. And it's made me want to go back and relisten to that amazing LLL box set of scores.
