When Littlefoot is mourning his mother in the first Land Before Time. When he sees his shadow and runs to it thinking its his mother.............................. wow. Made a Horner fan right then and there.

The entire 'spider' sequence from KRULL (Horner) - represented by two cues, "The Widow's Web" and "The Widow's Lullaby", is a stunning 11 minute suite of music with so many emotions at play, from dissonant terror of the rawest order (with Ligeti-esque blasts of choral dissonance) through celestial awe (the ending of the former track) and pathos-laden nostalgic yearning (the children's choir in the latter cue), to the rapturous recapitulation of the love theme that follows and finally a massive orchestral and choral crescendo that evokes fear and wonder simultaneously. BRILLIANT.

Not only does Horner's music here add tremendous maturity and depth to this sequence (which itself, dodgy stop-motion for the spider aside, is the most original and affecting scene in the film), but it is, compositionally, a true marvel of virtuosic proportions, and a high water mark in Horner's output in my opinion.

I will never understand why this score isn't considered his best EVER. The while damn thing is jsut freaking awesome. It leaves his TREK scores absolutely gasping for air in my opinion (not that I don't think they're great, but... They're no KRULL, that's for sure!).

100% agree. Horner's best and my favourite soundtrack ever.

that scene in "Hancock" when he wills himself back to life and flies away. features Powell's incredible "Death and Transfiguration" which i'm surprised isn't used in movie trailers and sports events

There are two scenes in Porco Rosso. One where Porco is flying at low altitude over the sea, and a montage scene were Gina remembers her first time flying with Porco. Those are gorgeous moments in the film and a good example of old fashion "movie magic". You totally forget your watching a "cartoon" at that point.

There are a lot of good if not great ones mentioned here. I've been thinking of this sublime business lately and so let me share one: Raintree County when the young Clift character is moved to search for the fabled title object after the professor's exhortation. It's just film with music that starts off with a soft wordless chorus underscoring the solitary figure in a rowboat and slowly builds to a heavenly crescendo as he looks up to the flying creatures sweeping across the bayou right after he disembarks. We are talking overwhelming beauty in the great outdoors and the music captures his awe and creates a greater sense among the audience. Powerful music, the kind that when heard on its own forces you to envision the setting and get swept up in all its glory.

"Happiness" - the honeymoon montage from DAYS OF HEAVEN.

The score has me dying to see the movie.

Did Superman/Lois Lane aka Reeve/Kidder's flying come up?

The first, deep kiss in Vertigo (backround spinning).

You must! Between Morricone's sublime score and the Alemendros/Wexler cinematography, one of the greatest music videos ever. It's my favorite movie of all time.

Here's an unpopular one: "Flight" from Man of Steel (when Superman first flies). Awesome.

E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL: "Saying Goodbye" especially at the apex.

I was going to mention this but hey there are so many beautiful suggestions in this discussion which is a wonderful topic. Hey sometimes when watching a movie I find one then along comes another. You just can't have one.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN - Basil Poledouris

"Atlantean Sword" scene, with wonderful, mystery and beauty music, and finale "Battle of the Mounds" scene, starts with battle preparations and Conan speech... And "Recovery" scene with Conan sword practice...

Pure magic.

And to be honest all scenes with Basil music in this movie are just great....

It's wonderful. In fact, the post-mortem stuff with Valeria is spine-chilling to me.
