I have the first expansion of this and I'm not entirely sold yet on the new release. For those who have both (and can be objective about it), is it worth the double dip? My soundtrack budget these days forces me to be pretty selective.

I parted from mine many moons ago when I needed the dough. The score was impressive but not ingrained as it should have. And I also hadn't seen the film untill today! Now Iam looking forward to reclaim the score. Thanks Intrada.

What exactly sounds better, guys? Is it better or is it louder? I have bought numerous reissues for better sound quality; I think about two-thirds of the time when I do an A/B test it just means louder. The old release sounds quite good, so I am wondering what could possibly be improved. This isn't what I would consider a new mix, unlike LLL's Star Trek or going back to Tomlinson's superior stereo mixes for The Great Train Robbery.

I will have to do A/B test. I think this one is louder with a bit more clarity, plus a few extra cues.

I bought the new edition because my old cd was very scratched, I want to treasure this great great work by Goldsmith scratchfree! Sound is a bit better so far as I can hear with good earphones, but it already did sound great, in my opinion. If you're saving your money for other important things it's not such a big deal.
Other thing: Can somebody please indicate the difference between the 2 "into the west" tracks? I hear no difference at all, for me it's exactly the same track! I stop comparing the 2 'cause it's driving me nuts!! :-)

Just did my first listen-through. Another fantastic presentation from Intrada. One of those scores that, even without the movie itself, tells a compelling story. I can't even fathom the mental dexterity and imagination it takes to score a movie. And Goldsmith did it over and over and over.

Now, of course, I'm going to have to immerse myself in his other early-80s scores. What a mother lode.

Ran this magnificent CD straight through...marvelous. Intrada has done another stand-up job here. IMHO the sound quality is much improved--not just louder.

I must point out that I REALLY enjoyed the liner notes that Douglass Fake and Roger Fiegelson put together...they relate what they know and what they've experienced, they don't venture into areas that become speculative or fill the pages with superfluous prose...much appreciated.

NIGHT CROSSING is Goldsmith at his early 80's best. True, there are echoes of THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL in the waltz, THE BLUE MAX in the balloon flying sequences (they are flying in Germany after all!), and that 3/4-5/8 conspiracy percussion undercurrent that first appeared in CAPRICORN ONE. This is a case where form follows function. None of these "echoes" disqualifies this work as one helluva enjoyable, original score.

As an aside, I first saw NIGHT CROSSING at a brand-new theatre in Costa Mesa, California, as the first balloon flight soared into the night, the center channel went out for 10-15 minutes...No dialogue! Everyone in the theatre was bitching up a storm. I found it pretty cool, because it was mostly Jerry Goldsmith's score and the sound effects in the Left, Right and Surrounds. I longed for the album then, and have had every LP and CD version since!

I envy those of you who have their copies! I'm still waiting for SAE to send mine.

I don't suppose an extra couple of weeks waiting will hurt, but next time I have an order made up exclusively of Intrada titles, I think I'll try Intrada themselves.

When will Intrada have copies of this up on Amazon?

A very sensible idea sir. I've been relying increasingly on Intrada for my soundtrack shopping needs and I must say that the results are brilliant.

Julian, I think SAE is out of stock and this along with Deep Rising. I checked my order and that was the reaon for hold for my 6cd order; so I told them to send the other stuff. However, the same was in limited stock with Intrada and I was advised to place my order asap as it was indeed limited. So I was lucky to get my order processed. It should be back in stock around 15th of July.

This was the most impossible to find thread EVER. I got a ticky poppy one too, asking Intrada
for a possible replacement now, or if we are all just imagining things.
I wanna bask in the remastered, shiny glow of one of my all time favorite Goldsmith's too!!!!!

Classy package and aside from the above, it does sound good - not sure if better than the
prior limited release, but we'll see. I can say that anyone who has the 1st, 47min. issue - please,
for the love of all that is good, dump that thing. Substandard tapes were used and I DID a/b that
one to the other edition - its another case of Len Engel-itis for the mix. So, if you fawn over the
original Varese THE FINAL CONFLICT cd, too.....enjoy the original Intrada Night Crossing as much! ;-/

Goblin- Thanks for unearthing the thread since I too was trying to look it up myself. My copy arrived last week and I got down to it. The sound quality jump is astounding. The Eric Tomlinson effect was recaptured in the mix and I was very impressed. I had the previous Intrada album but at that point I hadnt gotten into the score and possible because the sound wasnt that great to begin with and had to let go off my copy to an eager buyer. But here the picture changes completely. The sonics are upfront and have that oomph. Liner notes are really great and the two major alternate and revised cues are also well explained in the booklet. Hats off to the Intrada team for making a top notch production here. This one is a keeper !

Hey Amer! (It's Sean A. from Facebook! smile
Happy to hear you are enjoying this one. ..I was always floored by any negative remarks towards this score, how anyone could find it any less than a masterpiece. As a 70/80's kid, this is MY Blue Max.
Not that I don't love that one as well, but Crossing soars even higher for me. I snuck a listen on my very first plane ride back in '94 & perhaps that moment sealed this piece for me.

I 'sorry, but I belong to the group of wanting all complete, all-inclusive.

So you would prefer the version hacked up by somebody else purely to accommodate a mechanical change in the length of the credits, rather than the properly composed one?

I most certainly not. :-)
I do prefer the music as written by the composer, not as patched and pasted by someone to accomodate the movie.

Third time I'll be visiting this beauty. All these late 70's, early 80's Tomlinson recordings are some of the best sounding scores ever.

True... Now if only SOMEONE would release Robert Folk's THE SLAYER, which was recorded by Tomlinson at Abbey Road in '82...

I digress & back on topic!

This is indeed a great score and I'm glad it's available again for those who might not have it. "First Flight"'s swirling, impressionistic majesty (complete with wind machine!) is as close as Goldsmith ever came to directly channeling Ravel's DAPHNIS ET CHLOE, thought of course LEGEND's choral writing isn't far behind.

Still of course distinctly Goldsmith's own though.

The sound quality (itself) on this release definitely sounds better and is worth the upgrade for audiophiles. However, there is an issue that is hard to miss. Throughout the entire recording, there are pops and tics. Every three or four seconds. Now before anybody shoots vitriol my way about this, I did test the disc on more than one player and on my iTunes. The sound anomalies are still there. Is it just my copy? Are others experiencing this too? Are the pops inherent in the recording itself? I will e-mail the good folks at Intrada as well.

PS this post is not to stir the pot so please don't yell at me wink

Same problem here.

First I have to say the customer service at Intrada is exemplary - I put these poor guys through this a couple of times, and they were nothing but understanding. I hear the pops & clicks too. First copy had too many clicks to not be distracting - a replacement has less, but there are still "anomalies inherent in the master tapes". So, I'm inclined to think they are there to stay - I'm still happy to have this, but am keeping the prior version too. I have to maybe chalk this up to maybe I've played this score to death and know it far better than I should....
