Today at 5:15 PM ET, Turner Classic Movies will be showing the hard-to-see 1971 Swedish film THE EMIGRANTS. This film was director Jan Troell's first big hit in the U.S. market. It follows a group of Swedes, fleeing starvation and religious persecution, as they attempt to make their way to America in 1844. Shot in Sweden, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, at the time of its production THE EMIGRANTS was the most expensive Swedish film ever made and broke Swedish box-office records. The original Swedish running time of 191 minutes was edited to 151 minutes for its 1972 American release, and it is the shorter version that will be shown by TCM.

In 1971, the Swedish release of THE EMIGRANTS received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1972, the American release of the film received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress (Liv Ullmann), Best Director (Jan Troell), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Troell and Bengt Forslund). THE EMIGRANTS has never been issued on Region 1 DVD.
