Of course the answer to the business of whether to include Mitchum's vocals is to go down the old extra tracks route. You know, bonus tracks. Even a double disc set with the old Laughton LP as part of the package.
I think the problem with this is recreating the vocal performance of the girl that sang the song--it's kind of the centerpiece of the score and it would be a real challenge to get that right. But this would be my top choice for a score rerecording right now.
Absolutely. There's an innately haunted quality to the original recording - the voice, the sonics, all of it - that simply can't be recreated. Still, the history of this soundtrack on album is interesting to say the least and I'd love a complete presentation however we can get it.
