With comic book movies, science fiction, and of course technological gadgets being the mainstream today and perhaps no longer so nerdy or geeky, I would have to say that film music enthusiasts are the last outpost of pure nerd/geekdom unsullied by popular culture exposure.

I've only met two film score fans in person and everyone else who happens to learn I love film music--it's not something I discuss in public lol--reacts awkwardly. We may be the last "pure" nerds/geeks around with something that should be more popular, as music in movies is heard by millions but still manages to go unnoticed by the general public. Didn't Roger Feigelson say that there were maybe 10,000 film score collectors worldwide? That's a small pocket o'geeks and nerds...

Wow, I hit the jackpot - both my wife and bro-in-law share my love of soundtracks, qualifying "soundtracks" to mean those from the eras and genres we like.

I've never met anyone who likes film scores as a broad category, myself included.

Here we go again lol. Everyone has to try and be a LAWYER these days. The power of words ! If you don't like something then let's just REDIFINE it or at least blurr the lines. Let's get out the WORD POLICE. I don't give a rats ass if someone wants to label me a nerd, an asshole, or whatever anyone wants to call me. I am happy with who I am and as long as I have a clear conscience who cares. (The real problem arises when someone doesn't have a conscience). Even as a child peer pressure didn't work, and I am grown now. Granted it is a fine line, but for me "know in your head you are as good as anyone else is, but know in your heart you are not better than anyone else". We are all humans, but we are all INDIVIDUALS. FREEDOM. When you want to fix a problem, you have to go to the root of the problem. You don't put a band aide on something that needs to be amputated.

Granted it is a fine line, but for me "know in your head you are as good as anyone as anyone else, but know in your heart you are not better than anyone else".

Or perhaps:

"It is necessary to have a very definite personal pride, coupled with the assurance that you are in the right. And above all, the ability to deal with others not only as if you were their equal, but without offense, their superior."

~Robert Benchley

Yes I defiantly agree with that statement, but it does not address enough the fact that nobody is really any better than anyone else. A king or a slave all put their pants on the same way (except the king may have the slave put them on for them but surely you understand what I mean lol). I remember being told "sticks and stones" as a child and also being taught "work hard to get ahead because nobody owes you anything". Again, you don't put a band aide on something that needs to be amputated. Who cares if someone calls me a nerd or asshole. I don't.

Since this is a old thread I am surely not derailing anything from one's interest in the question that was asked almost ten years ago I can't really give a true answer to that question. I think to an extent anyone who loves anything that much could be in some ways be describe as a sought of a nerd, if being a nerd means someone denies a part of the so called outside world for their deep interest in something. I can't say either is that a compliment or a insult. Interests and hobbies to a certain extent can be healthy along with the needs and concerns of our daily lives. Too much of either side might not be so wise. But who is to say how much is enough or is not enough. I think like many words and stereotypes many people misunderstand what the word nerd really means. However may I ask this question what would you call a person who denies themselves much enjoyment in things because they are so hung up on doing things not what they might really enjoy but what they think is popular to enjoy. In short a fear of liking something that might not be that popular, only spiting themselves at the same time? A fool perhaps?-LEO BUSGULIA[SPELLING] often used a wise quote that went something like It is better to be number one of yourself then number two of somebody else.

Moderation is good for most things, but what you are great at, yell it to the skies.

Someone upthread said something about no one being better than anyone else. Not sure what that means with regards to nerds. Yeah, we are nerds, so what? If someone says nerds are inferior, I guess that statement kicks in to say, nope. I also know that humanity is endlessly obsessed with categorizing us all, and putting us into layers, ethnically, religiously, in terms of age, wealth and everything else. This data box driven model of humanity is really boring and pointless. Gee, that might sound nerdy.

I arm up every day with an M9, M4, kevlar helmet and body armor and go riding around in an up-armored humvee/MATV/MRAP to fight a counter-insurgency. Then when I get back to base I listen to Indiana Jones and Transformers on my iPod. Not sure I'd call myself a "nerd."

You are writing on FSM from Afghanistan, wow.
I guess your coworkers would probably be afraid to tease you.

So you are saying no mixing the of the film score while you are using the heavy arms?
Ah, come on, that would be an awesome film score story.

Haha ok in all fairness, I MAY or may not have jammed out to PACIFIC RIM in the turret.... lol But you will NEVER see a picture of that razz

Honestly, I've found more closet-film-score-fans here than I expected! Most guys have random tracks of John Williams and Hans Zimmer on their iPods. Believe me though, I'm converting a few!

Great Pacific Rim story. Yeah, we need a picture, but I know, against regulations or something I am sure. Terrific to know there is a real non-nerd among us.
