Brilliant selection, Onya.

This isn't really my answer to the query, because this wouldn't have been my ideal choice in the history of Hollywood, but the scoring session at which I DID get to kibbitz, at the invitation of director Daniel Petrie, was the TV Movie, ELEANOR AND FRANKLIN: THE WHITE HOUSE YEARS, conducted by composer John Barry. Still a golden memory of my youth.

And oh yes, I almost forgot, in order to write about them for the Rozsa Society newsletter, Pro Musica Sana, I witnessed the week's worth of sessions for DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID. Dr. Rozsa, ailing, alas, was unable to attend, so the conducting chores were exercised by Lee Holdridge, assisted by the legendary orchestrator Christopher Palmer.

Have you heard it? Heindorf taped him and didn't tell him until afterwards. It is a great album. Imagine listening to the greatest pianist who ever lived and getting to drink and hobnob with Heindorf and his friends, all in elegant 1950s Hollywood splendor!

Preston's highly entertaining account in PMS 35 (1982) is available free online at www.miklosrozsa.org

Back in early 1991, I was dating someone who worked on the Warners lot. Knowing I was a big film music fan, they snuck me into a scoring session where Marc Shaiman was working on The Addams Family (I guess Paramount didn't have scoring stages). Nothing notable happened but I thought it was kind of cool.

I would have crashed the sessions for LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, HOW THE WEST WAS WON, and STAR WARS so I could have a chance to document how they were able to achieve the outstanding audio quality of their recordings. Keep in mind that LOA was reportedly recorded with just three microphones.

FOR THE RECORD:

If anyone is so moved as to heed John's recommendation of my PMS piece on DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID, I just wanted to state the embarrassing fact that I misspelled the name of distinguished music editor, Elsa Blangsted.

Monsieur Jones, I envy you. The scoring of Rigby Reardon's explanation of the "cleaning woman" phenomenon is about 30 seconds of the finest scoring Rozsa ever did.
