To be exact, it was my 39th birthday, not 40th. But I was massively drunk. In fact, I'm still quite hung over, and it's been two days! Problem was that I started a bit too early, and my pals kept giving me these strong beers throughout the evening (I even downed a glass of aquavit as if it were a shot). Several bouts of hick-ups, and I think I annoyed some of my friends by constantly claiming they were not drunk enough -- but beyond that, a good evening -- capped off by my usual rendition of "Circle of Life" at my regular karaoke place.

I'm nearing 40, but refuse to accept my age!

And yes, several julebords coming up (I'm impressed you know that tradition, Thomas! Do you have anything like that in the UK?), so I just have to recharge my party batteries.

Gearing up now for what seems to be the only 'julebord' of the season (unless some invitations roll in over the next two weeks). Just a regular Hansa pilsner; we'll be meeting up at a beer place before the dinner, so I'll delve into the specialized brew then.

I know that 'julebord' is a Norwegian tradition, but has anyone else had -- or going to have -- any Christmas parties this season?

We had our work Christmas Lunch/Party on Friday in a nearby establishment. Drinking from noon to about 9pm and strangely didn't end up that drunk. I even had a few straight vodka for God's sake! A couple of the girls I work with made the effort and looked quite stunning, so that was a welcome distractionwink

Lucky you!

I started drinking at 16:00 on Friday and kept it going to 3:00 -- 17 beers later. So I most definitely got drunk, and I am -- in fact -- still quite hung over, two days later.

Old news, probably mentioned earlier, but I'm sure Thor would want to know. wink

A saturday that also happens to be New Year's!

What are your plans for tonight? I'm gearing up now for a party with a group of some 6-7 people. Loads of specialty beers bought in (including a VERY special brew from Scotland).

For this weekend I will make my "famous" Sangria Improvisada in order to celebrate the generous end-of-year bonus check my wife's employer awarded all the employees. It will pay for this year's European trip (Prague-Budapest) with still plenty left over.

Happy New Year! A bit late I know, but just out of curiosity Thor, what was the "VERY special brew from Scotland."?

I'm going out tonight to eat a pig's head. Ears, snout, everything except the eyes - which are thoughtfully removed beforehand by the waiter. I wish he'd take out those bloody teeth though. I hate the way dead pigs grin at you. Spanish red wine in abundance, probably Rioja. And perhaps a couple of rum concoctions once we decide we don't care about our livers any more.

I'll regret it tomorrow. And the next time I get my medical check-up.

Disclaimer - Drinking to excess is not funny and it's not clever.

...thor....what was.....that .... scottish ... beer.... .. .

Can't remember. I'm currently away on a film festival up North. But I have one bottle (of three) left. I'll check it when I get back home.

This Saturday, I was out on a MASSIVE binge, downing some 15 beers along the way. Trying to walk back home on a slippery surface, I fell and smashed my forehead in the pavement. Now I have a big bruise on my left eyebrow and a HUGE black eye. So I'm basically watching films in 'monovision' up here. big grin

But I can't let that stop me. TIFF (Tromsø International Film Festival) is always a highlight of the year, and although I'm only here untill Friday, I'm sure it will ripe with drinking -- as is the custom.

39 years old, going on 18.....

A lot of beer, and INCREDIBLY irresponsible behaviour. I haven't been "falling down drunk", not like the way Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield describe it in Michael Winner's incomprehensible yet professionally made SCORPIO featuring a typically striking score by the great Jerry Fielding, drawing heavily on his old bag of tricks as always, but wonderful stuff however you look at it, since I was about forty years old, although actually come to think of it I think there was once, perhaps seven or eight years ago, when I did , but it's certainly not the norm now, nor has been since 1999 or thereabouts, and it's not something I'm proud of but you're only young once. What's the name of that Scottish beer again?

He, he....great rant, Graham. On a binge?

I'm having a few beers at my hotel room now, gearing up for a press party here in Tromsø. There will be a similar night tomorrow.

I'm aware it's irresponsible behaviour, but I've never fallen like that before -- not even when I've had MORE than this. Could have happened in sober condition too, given Norwegian winter nights. Not that that's an excuse; I know I have to make some changes in my life. I have to lose about 20 kilos(!) to get in normal shape, and I have to adjust what I eat and drink as well. But you know the irony -- these changes are easy to make when life is good otherwise; when it's not -- like now -- it's INSANELY easy to "escape life" for a night or two during the weekends. While it should obviously be the other way around.

Hey Thor, just out of curiosity, any idea what that Scottish beer was?

Ah right! Actually that's one (of many) I don't know. Thought it might have been something from the Orkney Islands, a tiny yet internationally acclaimed brewery where I spent an entire weekend, coz the chief brewer is an old pal of mine.

Keep on cheering!

Not Scottish beer, but Scottish gin--Hendrick's, to be exact. This weekend I'm going to attempt the Hemingway-devised drink, "Death in the Gulf Stream." The social occasion will have to wait until my Mai-Kai visit on Valentine's Day aka Just Another Day of the Year When 98% of FSMers Don't Get Any "Action."

Had 7 beers, on to cognac now. I'm having a difficult time at the moment, with a number of phyiscal issues (among other things), and I don't want to elaborate, sorry. But I'm enjoying a good 'binge' in my own apartment. This isn't usually accepted by society at large, but I don't care.

What about you? Any plans for the evening?

Sorry to learn of your maladies, Thor. Endure, man. Endure. smile

What brand of cognac? I usually imbibe of the stuff during the Christmas holidays, along with some swell Belgian chocolates.

Nothing planned for this evening other than my usual Indian food Saturday night. I bought a Polish beer called Johannes that at the very least has an interesting-looking label (I like the beer labels with an "historical" bent).

I've been invited to a colleague's wedding in May, so whatever Lebanese alcohol--I do enjoy their Arak--is available I will let the denizens of this thread--apparently just you and I, Thor--know as to its quality.

Cheers.
