Interesting. Some of the sampled material and /or Snow's use of it reminds me a bit of the atonal material from Williams' Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind (as does the opening of the T-Rex Rescue and Finale), but I've got such a bad ear for identifying samples out of context that I think it's probably just a similarity.

Chris.

Hmm, haven't listened to that score in about five years. Any specific cues?

Hmm... Try Barry's Abduction as an example.

Haven't gotten my set yet, so been listening to the track samples. A lot. And just noticed something:

At the 44 second mark of the sample provided for "Something Feels Off," from the eighth season finale Existence, a theme plays that sounds identical to that played at the end of the ninth season's Doggett-arc concluding episode "Release," when Doggett scatters his son's ashes.

What do you think? Did Snow recycle an idea? Or was there actually some Doggett theme or sub-theme that I never noticed on my crappy TV speakers during the eighth and ninth seasons?

Nope, don't think Snow borrowed anything from that. But that cue does obviously borrow a bit from Ligeti's work ;D

And as for "Something Feels Off", yes, it does seem to introduce that theme, but it seems to just be a blanket "pathos theme", because in that instance it is used to underscore a scene between Scully and Reyes (could be wrong, haven't seen the ep in a while). Snow just reused it for "Release", similar to how he reuses the "Scully grief theme" from Season 8 a few times in Season 9 in different contexts.

Playing the whole thing this morning, as it arrived yesterday. Is it just me or does each main title theme sound slightly distorted? The rest of the music doesn't.

Great package, MV. Good job.

Didn't sound weird to me, but I listen to everything through $20 sports headphones so I'm sure my fidelity isn't the best.

I finished listening to the release today and was very pleased with it. When I had first heard that the set would focus more on suspense/action music, I was a bit worried - that kind of stuff, and particularly the X-Files' brand of it, can get a bit fatiguing to my ears. My worries were unfounded, and I feel like, even over four discs, the listening experience was quite good. I especially liked the last disc.

Received the box set at the start of the week and have been listening mostly to discs 1 & 2, it's so much music and I want to take my time with it.

On the minor criticism for disc 1, I think it 'suffers' for lack of better word from the shows appearing in chronological order; this has to be the darkest disc out of the two sets for me so far and while "Eve" and "Young at Heart" set the tone, for me the best music comes with the second half of the disc; from the spine tingling "Tooms" to "Born Again" (what a great cue) to "Die Hand Die Verletz" to "Colony" and culminating in "Endgame", the tension and suspense builds and builds and that disc is almost like sitting through a really good episode.

Disc 2 immediately stars off with one of my favorites from Mark Snow and where I think he rivals "Thomas Newman" on this type of cue, namely with 'Eaten by Light' from "Soft Light". To me signature x-files score as it was a great cue from "Truth and Light", much like 'Disarmed' from "Grotesque". These cues sit well with the diverse unreleased material and great to finally hear it sans dialogue/sfx.

Just these two discs have given me a lot of pleasure (and the creeps) over the last couple of days. Can't wait to hear 3 and 4. smile

That's exactly what I was going for haha.

My set arrived finally smile

Done with the Disc 1 - 3. And its great! I'm sure, when Disc 4 is through it starts all over for the Rest of the Week.

Soo many great cues, that I longed for over the last years! Amazing Package! Especially the Myhtology Episodes are great involved. Colony / End Game (amazing), Talitha Cumi (good choice but there is something missing -> See X Files Volume 3 Request Thread razz), Tunguska / Terma (everyhting covered that needs to be represented!!! Very well done!) as the same for Gethsemane. Redux 1 and 2 deserve an expansion as well I would suggest (maybe Vol.3). Patient X is another great selection.

Overall I'm very pleased with the selection and can't thank the whole LaLaLand Team, Mark Snow and all people involved in the production process for releaseing this amazing set!!!

Not to my ears but I'm getting long in the tooth. The first season sounds odd but that's just the way it was made. Could you describe what you hear?

I have a similar question. For Volume 1, Disc 4, Track 2 (The Goldberg Variation) I hear a static sound for the first 8 secs and it gradually goes way. Is that supposed to be on the track?

I'm listening to Volume 2 now and so far it sounds great!

I think that's part of the mix, so it's supposed to be there. smile

That's a relief. I originally thought that it, but I guess I got a little paranoid. big grin

Spending some more time with disc 3 this week, favorites including 'fire of terma', the eerie 'pieces' and love the recurring theme from 'Gethsemane' as well as the 11 minute 'thawed'. A bit of a percussion lite disc with a lot of familiar piano/strings formula that worked so well for the show balanced with the more brooding bass horn/pizzicato movements. All in all I prefer this set more than volume 1 though each has its strengths. I haven't bothered yet with a setlist of favorites episodes but will do so after spending time with disc 4.

Just got this and am beginning to spin now - wondering if some album art will be posted soon, so I can get this set to match my Volume One....

My thoughts on the set are that it is pretty spectacular, which I had hoped it would be. I loved the first one but, in some respects, this feels more like a first round release. It just covers so much more of, what I consider to be, the quintessential moments of the series. It really plays like a best of and is such a great reminder as to what was so good about the series.

I completely agree with the forward looking program hitting season 1-5 a lot harder than 6-9. I know Snow continued to evolve and bring his A-game throughout, but the show sadly didn’t always follow suit. And as a huge fan of both it’s hard for me to separate the two and, as such, the music suffers a little for me as I recall something ridiculous or frustrating that didn’t quite work in the series.

It seems that a good portion of my requests made this release so I suppose that also helps in regards to my positive thoughts on it. Not everything mind you. As others have stated, and I stated when talking about Volume 1, the omission of the Mulder/Scully theme from Redux, Part 2, either in the hospital scene that opens the episode or in the Mulder at Scully’s bedside scene, is pretty shocking. I thought it felt like the only surprise not there for Volume 1 and, now that the episode is actually presented, I have to say it’s downright baffling. Has me wondering if Snow even wrote it and if there’s rights issues or something. The same goes for finding the stiletto at the cabin in Talitha Cumi. But, alas, that’s its own long post for another thread.

Young at Heart: just brilliant stuff here. I had requested the track “Youth” and it’s everything I would have hoped it would be. But then La La Land includes “Shot in the Crowd,” something not even on my radar and just a spectacular surprise. There was quite a lot of that in fact. Born Again, an episode I had written off, fantastic music. Same goes for “Newborn” from Home. Not sure why I never asked for this one more vehemently because it is wonderful. “Yappi,” and The Red And The Black selections. That piano work is stellar and I’m so thrilled it’s included.

And thank you, thank you! for including “Outmined” - that one is a holy grail and there is a lot of instrumentation detail I am finding the more I listen. Same goes for “Map of the Genome.” This may be what that previous poster was mentioning when they indicated confusing track titles. I was worried and baffled that the episode ender with Scully finding the spaceship would not be there, but it is indeed the track. And it plays great on loud speakers!

Track lengths are perhaps a bit too epic on this release for my tastes. Certainly would not have minded having “Faith to Keep Looking” and the final music in “Lil’ Cabin in Quebec” to be more easily accessible.

Overall this is an amazing release. I’ve always felt that every season is deserving of a CD’s worth of music. At 8 discs, that puts X-Files not quite there. Obviously for this series I’d take it to every last cue of music. So it’s exciting that the wait for Volume 3 will potentially be less than the 2 years and 4 months of this release. I certainly welcome it. Also kudos on the liner notes. After what I am sure felt like an exhaustive look in Volume 1, it probably isn’t easy to tackle it again, finding new and interesting information and analysis. Release of the year for me. Thanks La La Land!
