Listening to THE MACHINIST now.

Like a fascinating mixture of Bernard Herrmann and Pino Donaggio, resulting in an own distinct personality.

I consider "The Machinist" his best score. "The Last Circus" is magnificent as well. Check out his "Torrente" films

... and now it´s OLDBOY.

Another example why Banos is force to reckon with. Why the hell did I not discover him earlier?

I feel that way about John Scott, but it still feels good exploring great new music, so just enjoy it while it lasts! smile

The track "It´s over" from "INTRUDERS"... really haunting and heartbreaking crescendo of the main theme. So beautiful and sad...

Yup! Have you heard THE LAST CIRCUS yet? That layered, "agonized" string style from EVIL DEAD and OLDBOY's tragically operatic moments seems to have begun with that score. It's an AWESOME and totally wild movie to boot...

Off topic but same for me; Had never heard his name uttered until circa late 2010 when I caught the last ten minutes of KING KONG LIVES on TV, full end credits included, and was blown away. Never looked back, and today he's one of my favorites and I can't imagine my life without his stunning music. Can't believe in my 8 prior years of collecting I had never even HEARD of such a magnificent composer.

Michiru Oshima is a new one I recently discovered that had me going; "Holy crap, how can music this good have eluded me this long!?!?" Her score for some thing or other called FULL METAL ALCHEMIST is truly worthy of Rozsa, Poledouris or Williams. It's facking brilliant and this is just a very small sampling:

My excuse isn't as good as yours bobb.
I knew well enough about John Scott during my soundtrack collecting heyday (first on LP, then CD). I had the LP's for Greystoke, King Kong Lives and Man On Fire and liked them very much.
He just somehow got lost in the mix, due to all the other stellar film composers I was lapping up scores by at the time (Williams, Goldsmith, Horner, Barry, Morricone, Jarre, Broughton, Poledouris were just some) and the films he scored were even below the Goldsmith rung.
It was only with the Intrada re-release of King Kong Lives that I actually realised I didn't own one CD by him (just those old LP's).
Over the past year or two, he has musically blown my mind. He is every bit as good as the masters I mentioned above.
Anyway, back to Roque Banos, who is also a very good composer. smile

Yes, but it's deleted and goes on the used market for ridiculous prices - http://soundtrackcollector.com/title/66641/Coraz%F3n+Del+Guerrero%2C+El. A better bet is just to rent the movie or find the selection on the Recopilatorio compilation.

THE KOVAK BOX...

... once again - why do so many producers think that suspense can only be achieved by constant droning or huge blasts? Banos shows so easily how quiet, haunting themes do it so much better.

You should check out THREE-60 (I think that's the English language title), a 2013 Spanish thriller he scored immediately following EVIL DEAD. It's macabre piano and low string tones are cut from the same mold as KOVAK BOX.

I still have plenty to explore from this guy - Still haven't dived into his TORRENTE scores at all yet!

Thanks for the advice! Banos has so many scores in release, it´s like opening a treasure trove!

NO SOMOS SADIE...

... such a magnificent main theme. Really uplifting.

No Somos.. is probably my favourite score by him too.
The Ceremonial Theme is inspiring and the adagio-like Finale track (penultimate on the CD) is both glorious and tragic.

Here's hoping more projects come along that allow him such musical latitude to write something as overwhelmingly pompously wonderful again soon!
